1917 G$1 McKinley MS67 PCGS. Ex: Swiss America/Dr. Merritt. In 1917, a second issue of 10,000 McKinley Commemorative dollars was minted, of which only about 5,000 were subsequently sold. As in the case of the 1916, many of the remaining 1917s were sold to B Max Mehl, who subsequently sold them to collectors at a reduced price.

Very few circulated 1917 McKinley dollars are known, indicating that the public received very few pieces with this date. The coins were poorly publicized and distribution was considered unsatisfactory. The design was criticized at the time of issue and is still criticized in modern times. These factors combine to make the 1916-17 gold dollars one of the less memorable issues in the commemorative series of gold coins. As a footnote, the McKinley Birthplace Memorial was constructed in Niles, Ohio and today is still a popular visitor attraction.

The surfaces of this Superb Gem example are pristine, and display a beautifully soft satiny sheen. The coloration is subtly variegated on both sides with an interplay of lovely pastel peach and green shadings. The striking details are sharp and full. Population: 43 in 67, 0 finer (4/06). 1917 McKinley MS 67 PCGS. Another superb commemorative gold dollar, this piece is similar to the Pan-Pac dollar above in its clean overall appearance and attractive color. The pristine surfaces are blanketed with a rich reddish-golden patina and lighter peripheral accents of yellow-gold and faint traces of lilac. Thick satiny luster underlies this tonal explosion, and provides a scintillating backdrop for the patination. Population: 10 in 67, none are finer (11/95). (PCGS# 7455)

1917 G$1 McKinley MS67 PCGS. Only 10,000 pieces of this issue were produced--half as many as the 1916 coinage--and legendary Fort Worth, Texas, dealer B. Max Mehl acquired numerous examples after sluggish sales to the public. Deep, thick mint frost covers both sides of this delectable and rare Superb Gem. The color is ideal as well, with apricot-gold hues tinged with green-gold in the recesses. The strike is bold, and the appealing surfaces are essentially devoid of even the most trivial distractions. PCGS has graded 46 pieces in this grade, with none finer (8/06).

1917 McKinley MS 67 PCGS. Tinted a lovely pinkish-orange, the underlying mint frost is uncommonly thick and swirls around the surfaces unimpeded by any noticeable abrasions. 1917 G$1 McKinley MS67 NGC. Ex: Prinzi Collection. The mintage of the 1917 final-year McKinley gold dollar was half that of the 1916 issue, and sales were sluggish, even though proceeds of the issue were earmarked for a memorial to the assassinated president. Eventually Fort Worth, Texas, dealer B. Max Mehl obtained 10,000 examples of the 1916 and 1917 issues for sale, offering them at $2.50 each. Orange-gold centers meld into green-gold near the peripheral lettering. Both sides are essentially pristine, pleasing, and attractive. NGC has certified 46 examples in MS67, with none finer (11/06).

1917 G$1 McKinley MS67 NGC. This Superb Gem specimen of the scarce 1917 McKinley gold dollar is equal to the finest coins ever certified by NGC or PCGS. Both sides of this piece have brilliant satin luster that enhances the sharp design details. The obverse has bright yellow-gold color and the reverse has a combination of deeper yellow and honey-gold color. The mintage of this issue was limited to just 10,000 coins, probably a good decision as few of those were sold to the public. Much of the mintage was acquired by Ft. Worth, Texas coin dealer B. Max Mehl, a numismatic promotional genius throughout the first half of the 20th century. Census: 37 in 67, 0 finer (12/06). (PCGS# 7455)

1917 G$1 McKinley MS67 PCGS. This is one of the most appealing McKinley Gold Dollars of either date that we have handled in recent memory. Both sides exhibit a modest semi-prooflike finish with hints of brightness in the fields. The latter feature is only readily evident at direct angles, but original reddish-gold color is appreciable with even the most casual glance. A fully struck Superb Gem with virtually pristine features.

The McKinley Gold Dollars were authorized by an act of Congress dated February 23, 1916. The second-year 1917 has a net mintage of 10,000 pieces. It is not uncommon to find survivors in today's market that have been mishandled by collectors, but it is definitely a rare occasion when we can offer a Superb Gem in one of our Signature Sales. Population: 39 in 67, none are finer at either NGC or PCGS (10/02).
