1878-S MS 64 PCGS. The 1878-S ten-dollar is scarce in any condition and is seldom available better than XF. In AU it is highly prized and quite a pricey item. This is the only mint state coin certified to date by either of the major services, and it has been seen by both PCGS and NGC, and both have given it the same grade. It is far and away the finest piece known and will undoubtedly be of great interest to many collectors of this series. The fields are fully prooflike on both sides. The design elements are fully brought up also. As for identifying marks, the most obvious one is a small dig in the upper reverse field between the S and O in STATES OF. There is also a shallow scratch in the field below TRUST. On the obverse there is a mark that runs roughly parallel to the front of the coronet. We have to wonder where this coin came from. Is there some significance to the polishing evident from the dies and the fullness of strike? Was there some special person or occasion that prompted the striking of this piece? Sadly, we will never know. But we are left with the tangible object that remains 117 years after the fact as the finest example known of this scarce, branch mint issue. (PCGS# 8682)

1878-S $10 MS64 PCGS. The 1878-S Ten Dollar was struck just a year before an explosive increase in S-mint production of Eagles. Just 26,100 pieces were minted, and it is scarce in any condition, being seldom available better than a low-end AU. This remarkably preserved and produced example is assuredly one of the finest pieces known, being at the very least tied for that honor (there is a distinct possibility that the NGC census represents a resubmission of this exact coin) with a similarly graded 1878-S at NGC, and will undoubtedly be of great interest to many collectors of this series.

The surfaces are a rich golden color with prooflike fields and uncommonly bold design elements. As for identifying marks, the most obvious one is a small dig in the upper reverse field between the S and O in STATES OF. There is also a shallow scratch in the field below TRUST. On the obverse there is a reeding mark that runs roughly parallel to the front of the coronet. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer (3/04). (PCGS# 8682)

PCGS 1878-S MS 62. The 1878-S ten-dollar is rare in any condition and is seldom available better than XF. In AU it is highly prized and quite a pricey item. This is the only mint state coin certified to date by either of the major services, and is so newly graded that it does not show on the August PCGS Population Report. It is far and away the finest piece known and will undoubtedly be of great interest to many collectors of this series.

We have to wonder where this coin came from. Is there some significance to the polishing evident from the dies and the fullness of strike? 1878-S $10 MS61 NGC. Similar in overall rarity to the 1876-S and 1877-S, the 1878-S is one of numerous unsung condition rarities in the long-lived Liberty Eagle series. Only 26,100 pieces were originally produced, a mere four survivors of which have been certified in Mint State at NGC and PCGS (10/02). This sharply impressed, crisply detailed representative exhibits the small S mintmark that is common to all '78-S Eagles. Both sides are richly colored in orange-gold hues with a mostly frosty texture that thins to modest brightness at a few angles. There are relatively few abrasions for the MS61 level of preservation, a pair of tiny circular distractions on the obverse below Liberty's eye being useful for pedigree purposes. While not as well known as many of the CC-mint Liberty Eagle rarities in this collection, this coin is no less of a highlight that represents an important bidding opportunity for the astute specialist.

NGC 1878-S AU 55. Over the past ten years this date has really come into its own. This was due in large part to Akers glowing account of its rarity in all grades, where he wrote in part: "...I can think of no U.S. gold coin of comparable rarity that has been more ignored and lightly regarded than the 1878-S eagle." This is one of only 3 coins that have been certified in AU by NGC (11/92) with PCGS having graded none, making this piece tied for finest known honors. This is a lightly abraded coin with much reddish color and significant portions of original mint luster. Trends $8000 in AU 50, unlisted any finer (12/14). (PCGS# 8682)

NGC 1878-S AU 53. A very rare ten-dollar Liberty that is generally unavailable in any grade, but is especially rare above VF with the half dozen or so AU pieces known being the finest available. This is a well struck coin with attractive, light orange-gold color and small areas of mint luster still remaining around the devices.
