1904 $10 PR66 Cameo NGC. This is an amazing Cameo proof, unusual for the amount of contrast between the fields and devices. While many, in fact most, earlier dates prior to 1901 are seen with exceptional contrast, the years from 1902 through 1904 are seldom found with any contrast. During this period, authorities within the Mint felt that such an appearance, so desirable today, was unacceptable. They searched for ways to diminish or entirely eliminate any contrasting appearance. Current population reports for the various proof coins from this period clearly indicate the rarity of such pieces. Among proof eagles, for example, NGC has not certified a single Ultra Cameo example from 1902 through 1904. During this same period, only 30% of proof eagles certified by NGC have been assigned the Cameo designation.

The original proof mintage for this issue was 108 coins, although currently it seems that only about 30 to 40 examples still exist. Most proof gold issues still exist to the extent of about half the original mintage, although an exact census has not been attempted, to the best of our knowledge. This Premium Gem is sharply struck and displays exceptional yellow-gold color with deeply mirrored fields. A tiny planchet flake right of the final S in STATES should serve as a pedigree marker. The only other blemish of note is a tiny hairline in the right reverse field, near the upper arrow point. Otherwise, both sides of this piece are essentially flawless, as they should be at this grade level. Currently, only this one example has been graded PR66 Cameo by NGC, with one other certified as PR66★ Cameo (1/07).

1904 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. Although 108 proof pieces are recorded, this issue appears to have survived in lower proportions than some other proof dates with comparable mintages. This delectable example offers lush, lemon-gold surfaces that are undisturbed by mentionable impairments of any kind. The frosted surfaces contrast starkly with the deeply mirrored, black-on-white fields. Breen's proof Encyclopedia comments tersely of this issue, "rare Choice." A die line within the curl below the ear, near the top of the neck, is a diagnostic for this rare proof issue. There is a small spot of grayish toning near star 2. NGC has graded only four Cameo Gems of this date, with three Cameo-designated pieces finer (7/06).

1904 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. The Guide Book reports a proof mintage of 108 pieces, but given its high face value in the years prior to the 1933 gold recall, many proof examples of the date were likely spent. NGC (1/06) has certified a total of 29 pieces in all grades, with resubmissions presumably accounting for a portion of the population. This is the first proof 1904 eagle to appear in a Heritage auction since the NGC PR66 Trompeter specimen was hammered down for $55,200 nearly six years ago, and the first ever 1904 with a Cameo designation. The present razor-sharp Gem displays rich lemon-gold color, and only a single faint hairline is detected, from above star 3 to the chin. A die line within the curl below the ear, located near the top of the neck, serves as a diagnostic for this rare proof issue.

1904 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. Although the official proof mintage for this year is recorded to be 108 pieces, survivors are at least as scarce as other dates with noticeably lower mintage figures. Perhaps attrition just took a greater toll during the eventful decades that followed. This specimen is notable for deep, watery reflectivity and appreciable contrast for a proof from this era. The yellow-gold surfaces are not without a few modest blemishes, one easily found between Liberty's chin and star 2. A few more pinpoint marks are located beneath ME in AMERICA. If the coin's glittering appearance isn't convincing enough, a die line within the curl below the ear, located near the top of the neck, serves as a diagnostic for this rare proof issue. Census: 6 in 64, 8 finer (11/06).
