1803 1C No Stems MS62 Brown NGC. S-243, R.2. Easily attributable by the extra S below the second S in STATES, and the double fraction bar. Well defined on the obverse, the reverse is also well detailed, quite unusual for this often weak issue. Glossy, even brown patina covers each side. Other than the diagnostic characteristics of this die pairing, there are no notable marks, spots, or other possible pedigree indicators. Currently (4/04), this is the single finest graded S-243 Large Cent seen by either service. Worth a close look by a Large Cent specialist. (PCGS# 921501)

1803 1C No Stems AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-243, Die State III, R.2. Die state evidence indicates that this 1803 No Stems cent was struck before the 1802 S-241 No Stems cent. In Early American Cents, Dr. Sheldon had some particularly interesting comments regarding the emission sequence: "In this marriage, the reverse is always found without the cracks noted for the 1802 marriage, demonstrating, as Newcomb points out, that this particular 1803 cent must have been struck before some of the 1802 cents were struck. The same thing is encountered four or five times among the early cents, and probably indicates that when a number of dies were still in good condition and not worn out, the transition from one date to the next was sometimes accomplished more or less gradually, with occasional returning to a die of the earlier date, perhaps in order to 'use it up.' They had to be thrifty at the Mint, especially with Congress in session almost next door, and many a Congressman looking for something to 'correct.'" The obverse has a narrow rim break right of TY, but this is barely visible due to poor centering. This cent is tied with several others for 11th place in Del Bland's Condition Census. The surfaces are lovely with chestnut and olive-brown color. Traces of faded mint frost are visible on the reverse. Magnification reveals just a few tiny circulation or handling marks.

1803 1C No Stems--Reverse Planchet Flaw--AU53 ANACS. S-243, R.2. Small Date, Small Fraction. The reverse exhibits many engraving blunders: a double fraction bar, no stems to the wreath, the second S in STATES is widely repunched, the C in CENT, the M in AMERICA, and the N in ONE are recut. A relatively small planchet flaw (as made) is noted on the rim above the first S in STATES. A sharply struck chestnut-tan piece with a hint of darker color on the lower right reverse. (PCGS# 921501)

1803 1C No Stems. S-243, B-1, R.2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. VF20 EAC. Die State II. This example of the "Stemless Reverse" still shows a trace of a break at the front of Liberty's throat. Intermediate die state, with some joining of the dentils in the area around TY and to the right, but nowhere nearly as progressed as the Breen photo illustrating Die State III, and other characteristics of that later state are absent. Lapping has removed evidence of clashed dentils near RICA, and a slight bulge shows in that area. The dark-brown surfaces of this coin are slightly pebbly. Perusal with a glass reveals a few grade-consistent digs and scratches, but the overall effect is quite pleasing and attractive.

The dark-brown surfaces of this coin are a bit rough, showing both some light pitting on the planchet, as made, and some subsequent light surface insults, none of them singularly mentionable. Die clashing on the reverse is most evident at the triple leaves from the bust of Liberty. Envelope Included. (PCGS# 921501)

1803 1C No Stems. S-243, B-1, R.2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. S-243. B-1, R.2. Die State V. Stemless reverse, with a "bald spot" in the hair above 1 in the date. On this late die state, a break above TY merges with a second break further to the right. The break above TY covers a portion of those letter tops. The second, lumpy break to the right covers the rim for a length of about eight dentils. While scant evidence remains right of TY from a clash with RIC on the reverse, there are numerous clashes prominent in the obverse fields from the reverse leaves. Axial die misalignment causes weakness at the obverse lower left quadrant, and on the reverse at D STA and nearby leaves. The surfaces are a glossy dark brown, with few distractions. Perusal with a glass reveals a not overly distracting cut in Liberty's hair, just above her ear.
