1864 1C Copper Nickel PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. To quote noted proof Indian cent specialist Ronald Sirna, "The reported mintage of 370 pieces is the lowest of all the copper-nickel Indian cents. Survivors are typically below average compared to the quality of the 1862 issue." This example is certainly atypical for the issue. The fields are black from the unfathomable reflectivity, and the devices are very heavily frosted, giving this coin an almost medal-like appearance. Very light in color with the "white" appearance that is so desirable on copper-nickel cents, which is an indication of originality. Magnification is required to see the only flaws on this coin: tiny flecks of carbon that are scattered over each side. An exceptional proof and the only PR66 Deep Cameo certified to date (10/03) by either service.

1864 1C Copper Nickel PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. Proof copper-nickel shield reverse Indian cents were struck for just five years, and although mintages reached 1,000 pieces in 1860 and 1861, net production was lower since many unsold pieces were melted. 1864 is the lowest mintage proof date, probably because it was only struck early in the year, before the introduction of the bronze alloy used for the remainder of the series. This needle-sharp Premium Gem displays consistent, thick frost throughout the devices and legends, and their contrast with the darkly mirrored fields is formidable. Subtle lime, honey, and plum tints emerge when the piece is rotated beneath a light. Census: 3 in 66 Ultra Cameo, none finer (4/06). (PCGS# 92265)

1864 1C Copper-Nickel PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. We are pleased to be offering several high grade representatives of this proof issue. The present example is the only Deep Cameo specimen known to the two major grading services (7/02). A beautiful coin, the apricot tinged surfaces shimmer with glassy, distraction-free fields. The devices are equally well preserved, although the finish is frosty in texture. Powerfully impressed, and worthy of inclusion in the finest Indian Cent collection. (PCGS# 92265)
