1868 $1 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. Only 600 proofs were struck of this With Motto issue. While Uncirculated and Proof examples are not difficult to locate of this particular date, a coin with this degree of cameo contrast is rare indeed. It resembles the Deep Cameo coins that the Mint produces today. The devices are very heavily frosted and the fields show unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity. The surfaces are nearly perfect in their preservation, with no distracting contact marks or hairlines on either side. An unbeatable type coin in terms of both technical preservation and visual appeal. This magnificent Superb Gem is the single finest-graded specimen at PCGS (7/06). (PCGS# 97016)

It most closely resembles the Ultra Cameo coins that the Mint produces today. The devices are very heavily frosted and the fields show unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity. Simply phenomenal contrast, we have to wonder if this was perhaps the first coin produced as there is no evidence of loss of frost or reflectivity. Likewise, the surfaces are nearly perfect in their preservation with no obvious or distracting contact marks or hairlines on either side. An unbeatable type coin in terms of both technical preservation and visual appeal. (PCGS# 97016)

1868 $1 PR64+ Deep Cameo PCGS. OC-P2, High R.3. One of two obverse dies used to strike proofs in 1868, this variety features a triple punched 1 in the date. Of the 375 proofs believed extant from a mintage of 600 pieces, OC-P2 is thought to represent about 250 survivors. The visual hallmark of this Plus-graded Choice proof is unquestionably its dramatic field-device contrast, enhanced by its lightly toned, deeply mirrored fields. The design elements exhibit razor-sharp definition throughout and the surfaces are remarkably free of distractions. A lintmark near star 3 serves unpedigreed marker. An eye-catching example. Population: 7 in 64 (2 in 64+) Deep Cameo, 4 finer (4/22).
