1872 $1 PR66 Deep Cameo NGC. Spectacular contrast between the icy white devices and legends and the flashy reflective fields confirms the Ultra Cameo designation. A gorgeously preserved and fully brilliant premium Gem of this penultimate proof Seated Dollar issue. Few Proofs retain such quality, as even the most careful numismatist could easily impair the surfaces of these hefty silver dollars. Examination of proofs from this period will normally discover extensive hairlines or other evidence of cleaning that leaves the surfaces with telltale signs and often much lower grades. Not so here, as the surfaces are undiminished by handling or hairlines. A strong loupe will discover faint roller lines on Liberty's knees and these extend into the right obverse field, and such lines are from the planchet preparation process where the silver ingots were sized to the proper thickness prior to the planchets being cut from the silver sheets. If you love stark white Gem Proofs, then here is a coin to consider.

This piece is Bowers' Doubled Reverse Die, proof variety 2, as listed in his 1993 Silver Dollar Complete Encyclopedia. IN GOD WE is nicely die doubled, which is not to be confused with the minor hub doubling (most noticeable on the G in GOD) that is always encountered on the reverse of Motto Seated Dollars. Just 950 pieces were struck. One of only two 1872 Seated Dollars to be certified as Ultra Cameo by NGC as of (11/05). (PCGS# 97020)
