1878 G$1 PR66 Deep Cameo NGC. An impressive, well contrasted specimen with glittering fields set against heavily frosted devices. A hardly detectable, paper-thin blemish on the portrait has no ill-effect on the coin's considerable eye appeal and is all that keeps this elusive early proof from Superb status. The 1878 gold dollar is a very rare coin as a proof and not a date to be confused with the much more common proofs struck later in the series. Only 20 pieces were produced and, since most business strikes display full prooflike brilliance, the number of proof 1878 gold dollars available has been exaggerated for many years. In reality, their numbers may be less than a dozen coins. Only one other Deep Cameo proof has been certified by either major service, that being a PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo.
