1964 1C Special Mint Set MS65-68 PCGS. These 1964 Special Mint Set coins are beginning to show up with increasing frequency in public auctions. Because of the lack of official documentation and their scarcity in auctions in the past, it has been difficult to say with any degree of certainty what these pieces are actually worth. However, with the appearances they have made over the past year or so, it cannot be long until the Guide Book will be forced to recognize these coins, just as the two major certification services have. Of course, once they are in the Red Book they will have official status as a collectible (and key) member of their respective series, and they will also have published prices to guide collectors about their value.

The proof about these special coins is on their surfaces. One might not give a second thought to coins from 1964 as a rule, but when forced to one has to admit that there is something unusual about these pieces. The strike is razor-sharp, as one would expect from a proof. The fields show an unusual hybrid satin and semi-prooflike finish. This is somewhat different from the 1965-67 SMS coins, but it is similar enough to carry the SMS designation. We believe these were prototypes that were struck before the SMS coins were minted in 1965, trial pieces if you will. Perhaps they should be considered as a part of the pattern series, but like 1856 Flying Eagle cents and Stellas, they are already on their way to becoming integrated in the regular series of U.S. coins from 1964. Much still remains to be discovered and revealed about these special coins, and undoubtedly much will be revealed in future years. For now, what we have are an occasional offering in auctions and a lot of questions. Included in this set are:

1904 MS Louisiana 1/2 Gold Token XF40 Cleaned Uncertified. Burnie L2. Struck for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition held in St. Louis. A bright yellow-gold piece with considerable remaining luster. The lack of a protective rim has allowed wear to the peripheral stars.

1899 1C Cent--Double Struck in Collar--VG10 PCGS. The Cent failed to eject from the dies after the initial strike. Instead, it rotated a couple of degrees counterclockwise, and was struck a second time. The second strike is a couple of degrees off center, with very narrow milling at 5 o'clock on the reverse and wide milling at 10 o'clock. Chocolate-brown in color with several letters in LIBERTY faintly visible.

1919 1C Cent--Broadstruck with Obverse Indent--MS63 Brown NGC. Apparently, two planchets were fed between the dies, blocking the collar die. A broadstrike resulted, with this Cent indented by a second Cent (not included) on the obverse relative to 6 o'clock. The indent occupies approximately 30 percent of the design, although the majority of the date and Lincoln's bowtie is present. An impressive chocolate-brown Cent with smooth surfaces. The reverse has a vertical mint-made lintmark at 6 o'clock.

1965 1C Cent--Double Struck, 60% Off Center and Broadstruck--MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. This spectacular, multi-error Cent began its life as an off-center broadstrike, with a 15% area of unstruck surface centered at 3 o'clock. After the initial strike, the Cent failed to eject from the dies, and the obverse was struck a second time 60% off center at 8 o'clock relative to the obverse. A newly fed planchet prevented a second impression of the reverse die. The force of the second strike bent the Cent in the center.

1982 1C Large Date Cent--Struck on Clad 10C Planchet--MS63 PCGS. For those who collect 1982 Cents by alloy, this rare copper-nickel Cent can be added to the bronze and copper plated zinc varieties. IN GOD WE TRUST is only partially present, as the smaller Dime planchet could not completely fill the dies. STATES is softly struck, but the centers are crisp. A shallow planchet flaw (as made) below the Memorial. A carefully preserved silver-gray example.

1978 5C Nickel--Struck on 1C Planchet--MS64 Red PCGS. A lustrous near-Gem that is dominated by cherry-red color, although wisps of lilac hues are occasionally found. The centers are not fully struck, as expected since the Cent planchet could not completely fill the Nickel dies. Nicely centered, although most of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is absent from the flan. A faint pinscratch above PLURIB limits the grade.

The date and much of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA has a 'stretched' appearance, as metal flowed to the borders without the restraint of a collar die. The major devices, however, are well struck.
