1873-CC 50C No Arrows AU55 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg. The Mint Act of February 12, 1873 affected the half-dollar series in three ways: 1) a minute increase in weight; 2) the placement of arrows at date to denote the weight increase; and 3) the melting of obsolete issues to provide bullion for the new With Arrows issue. It is believed that most of the 122,500 pieces of the 1873-CC No Arrows issue was melted for this purpose, making it an extreme rarity. Today, the 1873-CC No Arrows is an elusive coin in all grades. In fact, Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert, in their The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, rank it as the seventh rarest issue out of the 122 dates in the Seated half dollar series. Most survivors fall into the Good-Very Fine grade range. The present AU55 example is a lustrous silver-gray with faint incipient olive toning, and exhibits sharp strike definition on the design elements. The surfaces are refreshingly clean, revealing no detracting marks. A beautiful pedigreed coin for the collector desiring a classic rarity for her/his collection. (PCGS# 6338)

1859 1C PR67 Cameo NGC. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Indian Cent made its debut in 1859. This initial issue displayed a simple reverse design with the denomination ONE CENT enclosed in a laurel wreath. Since Longacre's oak wreath and shield motif was adopted in 1860, the 1859 has become doubly important as a one-year type. In the late 1850s, proof sets were not as popular among collectors as they are today, and a sizeable percentage of the 800 specimens reportedly struck was undoubtedly melted as unsold. This nearly flawless, razor sharp representative exhibits a rich copper-golden color overall, and is totally void of carbon and is otherwise essentially as made nearly a century and a half ago. Currently (7/04) this is the single finest known Cameo proof example to either PCGS or NGC, one non-cameo Proof 67 is known at PCGS. (PCGS# 82247)

1859 3CS PR65 NGC. This is the first year of issue for the Type Three design with a double outlined star and shield on the obverse. This sharply struck Gem proof has original ivory, golden brown, and iridescent coloration with exceptional aesthetic appeal. 1859 10C PR68 Deep Cameo NGC. As a leading numismatic auctioneer, we have to be careful that our own sales do not give us a false sense of the availability of certain coins. Take for example the proof 1859 Seated Dime. This is a genuinely rare issue with many of the 800 coins originally produced likely having been melted as unsold at year's end. Yet, this cataloger alone has had the privilege of describing several examples over the past couple of years. On the other hand, we can also testify to the fact that the typical proof 1859 Dime is rarely going to possess the technical merits and/or eye appeal of the present Superb Gem. The deeply mirrored fields leave little doubt about this coin's proof status. In contrast, the devices are well frosted. All areas present an essentially untoned appearance with only the slightest hint of golden color at the border areas. The single finest certified Deep Cameo designated specimen at NGC (7/04). 1875 20C MS65 NGC. The strong striking definition that is typically found on 1875-P twenty cent pieces is definitely present on this coin. In addition to the strong strike, the surfaces display bright mint luster that shines forcefully through the mottled gray, sea-green, and blue toning seen on each side. Close examination with a magnifier reveals a few small abrasions in the fields, but these are generally well concealed by the depth of toning. (PCGS# 5296)

1875-CC 20C MS65 PCGS. A satiny, well preserved coin that is sharply struck in all areas of the design and is quite appealing overall. The richly toned surfaces display strong luster and an absolute minimum of marks of any consequence. The Carson City Mint produced twenty cent pieces in just two years, 1875 and 1876, and the latter is an important American rarity which makes the 1875-CC issue the only collectible date from that western mint.

1875-S 20C MS65 NGC. The stated reason for creation of the twenty cent piece by Senator John Jones was to help alleviate a coin shortage that was created when several minor, odd denomination coins were abolished by the 1873 Mint Act, or "Crime of '73" as it was known by some. The more likely reason Senator Jones sponsored the legislation is because he was in the pockets of the western mining interests, and an extra silver denomination would help soak up just that much more Comstock silver that was flooding the bullion markets. This problem would be "solved" by more sweeping legislation in 1878 when the Bland-Allison Act mandated the purchase of between two and four million ounces of newly mined silver each month. But that is another story.

Even though the twenty cent piece only lasted as a circulating coin for two years, it has provided numismatists over the past century a short, completeable, and interesting group of coins to collect. The 1875-S is by far the most "common" of the several business strike twenty cent pieces struck, and it is a coin that can usually be located in high grade for a price. This is an especially lustrous and attractive example. Each side displays prominent die clashing in the fields, but there are very few actual marks from coin-to-coin contact. Lightly toned, there is only slight weakness of strike seen on several of the obverse stars and the upper wing of the eagle. (PCGS# 5298)

1875-S 20C MS66 PCGS. The Twenty Cent piece is not rare in the strict sense of the word. However, it is a very popular coin for type collectors and the 1875-S has the largest mintage and is the most available issue in this short series. This is a highly lustrous example that displays streaky gray-brown patina over each side. A bit weakly detailed over the highpoints of the devices, the only marks of note are a cluster of tiny abrasions on the upper reverse below OF. Outstanding quality. 1876 20C MS66 NGC. The 1876 is the scarcest of the Philadelphia business strike twenty cent pieces. It is an especially desirable coin in MS66 and better condition and far better than the type coin for the series, the '76-S. This is a sharply defined example that has unquestionably original surfaces. The satiny mint luster is covered with medium density gray toning that turns golden and then cobalt-blue at the margins. On the upper right portion of the obverse there is a pie-shaped grease stain that was struck into the surface at the time of manufacture--this has no effect on the price or grade of the coin, but we mention it so it will not be confused with a post-striking defect. 1876 20C MS67 NGC. Produced for only four years from 1875-1878, the twenty cent piece is perhaps the oddest denomination in U.S. coinage history. The most common date of this type is the 1875-S, with a mintage of 1.1 million pieces. The Philadelphia Mint delivered only two business strike issues, the 1875 and the 1876. The latter date is infrequently offered in any grade, a fact that should come as no surprise given the paltry original mintage of 15,900 pieces. To this cataloger's knowledge, we have not offered a representative of this issue whose technical quality can match that of the present Superb Gem. This coin is free of even the most trivial abrasion, and the luster is full and vibrant with a richly frosted texture. The strike is essentially full, but a few areas of slight bluntness of detail are noted around the edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing on the reverse. Pale champagne and gold iridescence overlays both sides of this spectacular specimen. This MS67 representative is one of only five coins so graded by NGC, while PCGS has designated just one example at the same level, and none have been graded finer by either service (6/04). Some light hairlining accounts for the grade, but the coin is extremely attractive, as lilac-gray toning frames the frosty devices to create a lovely, mild cameo effect, on each side. Sharply struck and carefully preserved, with a faint pinscratch evident in the left obverse field, and a couple of small handling marks on the reverse. (PCGS# 5303)

1875 20C PR66 PCGS. Only 2,790 proofs were produced of this issue, a significant number for sure for proofs from this era; however, survivors are scarcer than any of the other proofs produced in this series, all of which have lower mintages. The 1875 is especially elusive in such a superlative state of preservation as this, with only 11 other pieces so graded by PCGS and one finer (7/04). Obviously an original coin, the fields show unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity on each side, reflectivity that is unaffected by the deep sea-green and deep maroon toning that is seen overall. An exceptional and rarely offered opportunity for the specialist.

1875 20C PR65 Cameo PCGS. The first year of issue for this short-lived type, and often used as a type coin, the 1875 is not quite as "common" as its mintage of 2,790 pieces might indicate. Apparently 590 pieces were still on hand in the Mint on January 1, 1876, and the usual fate of such leftover proofs was to be melted. The current offering is well struck, with a deep band of vivid electric-blue and purple-brown coloration near the obverse borders, golden-gray color near the centers of each side, and orange-gold iridescence near the reverse peripheries. Both obverse and reverse exhibit pleasing cameo contrast, with deeply reflective fields standing out behind beautifully frosted devices. Exquisitely preserved and seemingly distraction-free, this is a simply splendid cameo Gem proof. (PCGS# 85303)

1876 20C PR66 PCGS. The 1876 was the second year proofs were produced of the Twenty Cent piece, and only 1,260 coins were struck. This is a lovely, exquisitely preserved premium Gem that has deep antique-gold, dark rose-brown, and sea-green toning over each side. The surfaces seem mark-free and, of course, the striking details are razor-sharp. Very scarce in such a superior state of preservation.

1877 20C PR64 PCGS. The original mintage was only 510 pieces of this issue, and after meltings a mere 350 pieces remained, all proofs. This is a deeply mirrored example that is toned over each side with deep violet centers and thalo blue color around the margins. 1878 20C PR62 PCGS. Breen (1988) says that of the 760 pieces struck, 600 were sold, the rest being melted. This example of the 1878 proof-only issue is very well struck, and exhibits a soft gray-gold coloration. A few trivial contact marks occur in the field adjacent to Liberty's right shoulder, but are not in the least bothersome. The only evident impairments to this lovely Twenty Cent piece are a few wispy hairlines seen in the fields, but these are not serious. (PCGS# 5306)

1796 25C Good 4 NGC. B-2, R.3. The Draped Bust quarter with a Small Eagle reverse is a one year type coin with a production of 6,146 pieces. The fields on this example are toned medium gray and blue, highlighting the silver-gray design elements which are fully outlined, save for the olive branch and leaves along the left reverse border and the first three letters in UNITED, which are worn nearly smooth. The obverse dentilation is strong, which is typical for the type, while most of that on the reverse is completely worn. A few old, toned over shallow scratches are found on each side, though none are severely bothersome. A very acceptable specimen for helping to complete a type set of early U.S. coinage.
