1794 1C Head of 1794 XF45 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-23, Die State V, High R.4. Called by Maris the "Standless 4" variety, with later die state examples of this variety more easily identifiable by the die crack from the rim though the pole. This is the terminal die state for the variety with the first crack extending through Liberty's hair and cap to the rim at 10 o'clock. A second die crack from the rim through Y continues to Liberty's nose and cheek. The surfaces on this piece are lovely and glossy with an even medium brown color that deepens only around the devices. A few pinprick-sized marks are seen on the obverse and even fewer are present on the reverse. A couple of small rim bumps are scattered around the obverse and there is one distinctive bump on the reverse rim at 6 o'clock. A lovely coin that is tied for 10th finest known; after viewing it is easy to understand why one would want to add his or her name to the distinguished numismatists listed in the pedigree.

1794 1C Head of 1794 AU50 NGC. VF25 EAC. S-24, Die State I, R.1. Maris called this the "Scarred Head" variety, so-named because of the ear-shaped depression (or "scar") in the hair below the ear at the back of the neck. Sheldon chose a more flattering name, calling it the "Apple Cheek" variety (as his father used to term it) because of the exceptionally rounded, full cheek of Liberty. This is a pleasing and attractive example of the rare early die state without any evidence of die cracks or clash marks. The surfaces exhibit medium brown color with olive tones. Unevenly struck with the left obverse and reverse slightly weak. A number of light abrasions are scattered over each side with a tiny rim bump at 10 o'clock on the obverse. Someone with too much time on his hands has "strengthened" one of the denticles on the reverse at 8 o'clock.

Despite the fact that this is one of the most common 1794 large cent varieties, the average condition of survivors is lower than most. Del Bland includes only a single MS60 coin alongside three AU coins in his Condition Census. This example is among the top 20 or so known for the die pair. This is a lovely cent with deep olive and steel color, intermingled with lighter tan.

Sheldon called this the Split Pole variety, for it is usually recognized by the die crack from the lower edge of the pole to the border. Some examples from the earliest die state do not have any evidence of this die crack, and must be recognized by Dr. Maris' Distant 1 nomenclature. This example appears to be among the top dozen known. The medium brown surfaces have splashes of darker steel color and very light porosity on both sides. NCS Corroded.

The Sheldon-75 variety is the most plentiful of all 1795 Lettered Edge cents. This is a gorgeous cent with golden-brown color and grayish-brown highlights. The surfaces are exceptional for the grade with only a few minute abrasions.

1798 1C Reverse of 1796 AG3 NGC. Good 6/3 = Good 4 EAC. S-178, Die State IV, High R.5. Although considerably worn, this appears to be the terminal die state for the variety, with a second crack through the date, parallel to the first. While this is still a rare variety, it was once considered an excessive rarity. When Dr. Sheldon published Early American Cents in 1949, he was only aware of four examples with a fifth reported. This variety was discovered years earlier by James A. Walker in 1913, and was first published by Dr. Charles McGirk in his series prepared for The Numismatist. Finest known is just VF30, and the classic Condition Census extends down to VG8. The extended census includes the 12 finest examples and reaches the Good 6 plateau. The obverse of this cent is nicely detailed with some remaining definition in the lower hair curls. The reverse is partly smooth, but the all-important single leaves at the top of each branch are clearly visible. This is a highly unusual example of the variety, for it is on a nearly smooth brown planchet with excellent surfaces for the grade. Only the slightest roughness may be seen with magnification. The typical example of this variety is found with very rough and darkly colored surfaces.

1798 1C Second Hair Style VF30 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-165, Die State II, Low R.4. This obverse die is instantly recognized, being the only obverse with a large 8 and with the Style II hair. Three reverse dies were used with this obverse to create S-165, 166, and 167. The surfaces have intermingled chestnut and dark brown with some lighter tan on the reverse. The obverse has a tiny rim bruise on R of LIBERTY.

This is from the same reverse die that was used for the 1799 NC-1 rarity offered later in this sale, and this 1798-dated cent was struck immediately before the 1799 overdate.

1801 1C AG3 NGC. Good 5 EAC. S-215, Die State VII or VIII, Low R.5. In the late die states, several bulges give the appearance of considerably more wear than has actually occurred. Such is the case with this example. The date is only partially visible due to prominent bulges in the area of the lower hair curls. Strong clash marks on the reverse cause some distortion of the surrounding area, again creating the appearance of more wear than is really visible. The result of all this is a coin that has the outward appearance of a lower grade than it actually is. Such is the case with this coin, yet most observers will be fooled if they are not familiar with the characteristics of this particular variety. This example has lovely surfaces for the grade, with pleasing medium brown color and attractive golden undertones.

1808 1C XF40 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-279, Die State II, R.1. The early die states appear to be more common than later states. This is a pleasing chocolate-brown and olive example that may have been cleaned and retoned. A small rim nick is visible on the obverse at 11:30. In Penny Whimsy, Dr. Sheldon talked about the obverse: "Found perfect and with the die badly injured. After the injury, the obverse seems poorly struck, with the stars on the right connected to the rim; the figures of the date distorted; ribbon ends distorted; a pit or indentation just in front of the throat. This die must have come into violent contact with something hard." We would suggest that hard object may have been the opposing reverse die! It is also important to remember that the dies for the Classic Head cents had an average life of over 250,000 impressions, a considerable number of coins for the period.

Cleaned and recolored with attractive light tan surfaces and hints of darker iridescent toning. NCS Improperly Cleaned.

1793 Chain 1C AMERICA XF45 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-2, Die State II, R.4. This variety is actually scarcer than the S-1 variety, but of course, not nearly as popular. Only 4,850 pieces are believed to have been struck from the March 1 delivery. This example is among the top couple dozen survivors for the variety, a fully acceptable example for the advanced cent collector. Two shallow scratches are seen on the obverse and there is a small rim bump at 7 o'clock. A couple of shallow planchet flaws are also located in the right obverse field, as coined. The color is a glossy light brown with blue intermixed, forming a desirable woodgrain pattern.

1793 Chain 1C AMERICA XF40 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-3, Die State I, Low R.3. This is an early die state without any indication of clash marks near Liberty's face. The S-3 Chain cent is the most plentiful of all five die marriages for the design, an ideal choice for the date or type collector. Despite the relatively common nature of this variety, it is difficult to find in higher grades. Well defined for a Chain cent with especially strong definition on the reverse. The surfaces display an attractive blend of medium and dark brown color, and are smooth and natural. Surface imperfections are minimal for the grade with the only notable ones being a very shallow scratch from the nose of Liberty back into the cheek (just barely detectable without a glass), and a few tiny abrasions scattered over the obverse. A tiny rim bruise over E of UNITED on the reverse is almost invisible in the holder. An exceptional Chain cent.

1793 Chain 1C Periods VG8 NGC. VG10 EAC. S-4, Die State III, High R.3. This is a late die state with a tiny chip in the obverse die at the lower left, where two cracks join the border. In a letter to Mark Borckardt quoted in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia, Harry Salyards explained his opinion that the Periods die variety may have been executed by Joseph Wright as "the treatment of the hair at the brow and temple is more like that on several of the Wreath cent dies than either the strange receding hairlines of the other Chain cents, or Wright's 'boundary wave' on the Liberty Caps." Probably more than 8,800 pieces were struck of this variety from the March 8-12 deliveries, according to Walter Breen's research. The obverse shows three shallow, curved scratches from behind Liberty's nose down almost to the rim below. Also, there is a long, angling mark in the exergual area above the date, and a couple of minor planchet flaws in the right obverse field. The reverse has a slight streaky granularity that is barely noticeable to the unaided eye. Medium brown coloration over each side.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--VF Details NCS. Fine 12 EAC. S-11b, R.4. Distinguished from its S-11a and S-11c counterparts by the presence of two leaves on the lettered edge. Possibly 2,500 to 3,000 pieces out of the 11,825 cents delivered on July 6 were of this sub-variety. Breen speculated that the change to the Lettered Edge might distinguish the Watson & Greenleaf copper shipment from earlier sources. The May 16 Watson & Greenleaf shipment totaled 11,294 pounds of copper. Very scarce in high grades, this coin easily has the sharpness of a VF20 coin, but the surfaces are dark with uniform evidence of corrosion and light burnishing. The central reverse is noticeably weak, indicating a later die state, although the porosity prevents an exact die state determination. NCS Corroded.

Similar to the Lettered Edge 11b variety, but on this variant only one leaf is seen on the edge. Walter Breen's research suggested that over half of the 11,825 cents delivered on July 6 were examples of this sub-variety. Many 11c cents were struck on highly defective planchets. This piece shows numerous small planchet voids, but nothing else in the way of Mint-made defects. Numerous small abrasions are also peppered over each side. Deep brown color is seen over both obverse and reverse with faded striking details around the margins.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--VG Details NCS. Good 4 EAC. S-5, Low R.4. This appears to be an early die state, although the quality prevents an exact determination. The S-5 is "sometimes called the most beautiful Wreath cent," according to Sheldon. The only possible challenger is the more common S-9 variant. Even on this heavily worn and porous example, the well formed and well spaced leaves above the date are apparent. This is the only Wreath cent variety with large letters in LIBERTY. As always on this variety, the date is more heavily worn than the other design elements. Porosity is seen over each side and there are also several shallow scratches on each side. A couple of minor rim dings are also present. The deep brown surfaces are lightly accented by reddish-brown highlights. NCS Corroded, Scratched.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--VF25 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. S-6, Die State I, R.3. The well-known "Sprung Die" obverse is always seen with some degree of bulge or convexity in the left obverse field, although this is an early die state with little evidence of the bulge. This variety apparently formed some 7,500 to 8,000 of the 12,000 cents struck between April 4 and 9 and delivered on the latter day, according to Walter Breen. This is a pleasing, glossy, light brown example that has modest amounts of reddish-brown and steel-gray color interspersed. Evenly worn from side to side, the only mentionable defects are a few small planchet flakes out of both obverse and reverse and three tiny planchet defects on the rims: one at 6 o'clock on the obverse, the other two at 3 and 4 o'clock on the reverse, the latter close to a tiny rim bump.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--Fine Details NCS. VG8 EAC. S-7, Die State IV, Low R.6. Probably no more than 700 pieces were struck of this variety and delivered April 13, the die failure on the lower obverse most likely accounting for its rarity. This is a later die state, one where the dot over the I in LIBERTY no longer shows. Heavy die failure is seen through the 179 of the date. Even though not present on this coin, the dot on the unique early die state of S-7 is taken as proof that the engraver used a twin punch to make the border beads. This piece has even, glossy, dark brown surfaces. Noticeable porosity is seen over each side with a tiny planchet flake out of the obverse on the upper portion of Liberty's neck, and a larger flake out of the reverse over the lower portion of the C in CENT. This is tied for 12th finest known of the variety. NCS Corroded.

Walter Breen estimated a mintage of slightly more than 8,000 coins, suggesting that most were struck June 27-28. He also compared the reverse to the second reverse of the 1793 half cents. Breen believed that both reverse dies may have been made at the same time. This cent has sepia-brown surfaces with very faint porosity and a few tiny rim bruises.

The most frequently encountered of Wreath cents, the S-9 is easily identified by the stem of the sprig which parallels the top of the date on the obverse and the kidney-shaped bow on the lower reverse. This later die state shows evidence of die failure on the lower reverse. The surfaces on this piece are uniformly porous, except above the N in ONE where it is significantly heavier. A very light rim bruise is located on the obverse between 2 and 3 o'clock, and there is a faint series of three shallow scratches to the right of the second S in STATES. Each side has deep steel-gray and brown patina. NCS Corroded.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--VG8 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-11a, Die State I, High R.4. The Vine and Bars edge device distinguishes the S-11a from its 11b and 11c counterparts. Only 1,500 to 2,000 pieces are believed to have been struck (on June 29 according to Walter Breen). The 11a is often found struck on a defective planchet, as is the case with this coin. A delicate planchet defect is located in the right obverse field at 4 o'clock, and there are several scratch-like planchet depressions on the lower reverse. A tiny rim bruise is present on the obverse at 4 o'clock. Several short scratches are located at the juncture of Liberty's hair and truncation of the neck. A light, vertical planchet depression is also seen in that same area that at first appears to be a scratch. Attractive light tan and darker brown color over each side.
