1859-D G$1 AU55 NGC. Variety 11-N. This is a pleasing example with attractive greenish-gold color and excellent surfaces, especially considered the appearance of the typical example. The strike is typical, or perhaps slightly nicer than usual. The surfaces stand-out as quite pleasing, with only a few light imperfections. There is no indication of the often seen clash marks usually associated with survivors from the mintage of 4,952 coins. (PCGS# 7553)

1885 $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. It is a very unusual and pleasant opportunity to be able to offer one of the rarest Liberty Quarter Eagles in the entire series. The 1885 has the fourth lowest business strike mintage--800 pieces--of any Liberty Quarter Eagle coin, next to the 1881, the 1875, and the prohibitively rare 1854-S. One theory for the exceedingly low business strike production is that even as late as the 1880s, individuals could come personally and bring their gold to the mint for conversion into coin of the realm. There was a glut of gold coins, particularly in the East, and no production had been specified. Maybe these precious few coins were produced from direct public demand. From this tiny mintage, a total of 99 pieces have been certified by both services in all grades, undoubtedly, some of which are certainly resubmissions. AUs seem to be the median grade for the date, and this specimen hits right in the middle. The strike is sharp and the surfaces still show some prooflike reflectivity. This is truly an opportunity for the astute gold buyer, as this is an exceptional coin that is rarely offered for sale. (PCGS# 7837)

1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-167 Original, Pollock-193, R.5, PR64 Brown PCGS. A Flying Eagle cent pattern in a large format, featuring a hooked-neck eagle, slanting 5s on the obverse, and ONE CENT in the center of the reverse surrounded by a thick laurel wreath similar to that of a Large cent. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The brown surfaces show a few faint glimmers of original red on each side, with a carbon spot located in the field just below the eagle's breast. (PCGS# 11709)

1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-888, Pollock-987, R.5, PR66 NGC. A bust of Liberty wearing a cap ornamented with three stars facing right, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the figure, and a scroll with IN GOD WE TRUST is below. The reverse reads 25 CENTS 1870 in the center and is surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The rich blue and rose tonal qualities partially obscure the depth of fields on the obverse, but the reverse is nearly brilliant in the center and displays a significant mirror-like effect beneath the golden-rose and blue toning that mostly hugs the margins. Superlative condition from a technical standpoint. (PCGS# 61132)

Complete 14-Piece 1873 Proof Set 1C . In the late 19th century, proof sets from the middle and latter part of that century were fairly common and were widely collected. Many of the premier collections sold until the 1950s contained runs of original sets. After that time, the value of the individual coins surpassed the collectibility of the sets; thus, most original 19th century proof sets have been broken up and the coins sold individually over the past 50 years. Since that time an occasional collector will attempt to assemble a proof set of a given year, but of course, such a set is a put-together job and there is no chance of reassembling all the coins that were in an original set. It is our belief that this is an original set that was purchased in the early part of 1873. The three cent silver and half dime both have a pronounced bluish cast as do the Closed 3 No Arrows dime, the Closed 3 No Arrows quarter, the Closed 3 No Arrows half, the Seated dollar, and the Trade dollar. The Arrows dime, quarter, and half dollar have a distinctive reddish cast, and we believe that these three pieces were added at a later date in order to provide both Closed and Open 3 examples for the set. The addition of these three coins certainly enhances the interest and desirability of the set overall.

The historic value of this proof set is undeniable. The year was a pivotal one in 19th century numismatics for four reasons. First, the Mint Act, or so-called "Crime of '73," eliminated odd denomination coins such as the two cent piece, the three cent silver, and half dime. Second, the Mint Act also converted the weight of U.S. coinage to the metric system, thus slightly increasing the weight of the dime, quarter, and half dollar. Third, as a result of the slight increase in weight, arrowheads were added on each side of the date to the dime, quarter, and half. Finally, in a completely unrelated development, the knobs on the 3 in the date on many of the coins were so pronounced that they resembled an 8 (PCGS# 2307)

1849 G$1 Open Wreath MS64 PCGS. Breen-6003. The first 1849 gold dollars had a small head on the obverse and an open wreath on the reverse. At the end of the year, the final 1849 gold dollars had a large head and a closed wreath. This Large Head, Open Wreath variety is a transitional issue, combining the open wreath from the earlier issues with the large head of the later issues. We are pleased to offer this lovely example with sharp design elements and frosty yellow-gold luster, accented by pale orange toning. A few tiny marks on the obverse prevented a Gem grade for this lovely example, and today, it may actually garner the higher grade. (PCGS# 7502)

Its importance to type collectors of Southern gold is greatly heightened by these factors. This lovely Uncirculated example displays pinpoint sharpness over the major design elements and rich green-gold color. 1852-D G$1 MS61 NGC. Variety 4-F. The first thing that is noticed about this lovely coin are the heavy and confused clash marks on the obverse, surrounded the portrait of Liberty. These give the appearance of surface roughness, which is actually not the case. The vast majority of this issue have similar clash marks on the obverse. The distinct minority survive in Mint State, or even close to Mint State condition. Both sides have bright yellow-gold luster with only minor surface imperfections. A couple faint scratches at the upper left obverse undoubtedly kept this example from a higher grade. Even one more grade point would make a substantial difference, as the finest certified by NGC is only MS63. Population: 15 in 61, 10 finer (4/05). (PCGS# 7519)

1854 G$1 Type Two--Planchet Lamination--MS62 PCGS. It is not certain whether we should laugh or cry when looking at this coin. This is a strictly Mint State example with sharp design features and fully brilliant yellow gold luster. A roughly oval shaped planchet lamination affects the right obverse field, letters AME, and the lowest two feather plumes of the headdress. The lamination is about 3.35 mm. wide by 4.25 mm. high and encompasses about 6 or 7% of the obverse surface area. (PCGS# 7531)

1854 G$1 Type Two MS64 PCGS. The briefly minted Type Two Gold Dollar is anything but scarce in About Uncirculated condition, but is by far the most challenging of the major gold types from 1850 forward in better Mint State grades. This Choice representative is far and away nicer than the typical Uncirculated survivor. Unavoidable die clashing is visible on both sides, but does not consume the viewer and the coin is very well detailed for this often mushy type. Both sides display a smooth, satiny finish beneath a thin veil of honey-gold patina. (PCGS# 7531)
