Six Piece 1897 Proof Set PR65 to PR66 NGC. The set includes:
Cent PR65 Red and Brown. Light salmon-pink color dominates, with hints of lemon and orange hues along the borders. Many collectors would not hesitate to call this piece full Red in color. A well struck Gem, no contact can be discerned, although a few tiny carbon flecks are noted.
Nickel PR65. Lime, rose, apple-green, powder-blue, chestnut-gray, and gold colors endow this sharply struck and nicely mirrored Gem. This undisturbed specimen displays considerable aesthetic beauty, and no marks or carbon exist that appear to limit the grade.
Dime PR65 Cameo. While the obverse cameo contrast is undeniable, the reverse exhibits spectacularly frosted devices. A brilliant and lovely Gem, the proof mintage of 731 pieces is the lowest nineteenth century production of the type. (This statement is also true for the following Barber Quarter and Half Dollar.) A nearly invisible horizontal slide mark on the neck prevents technical perfection.
Quarter PR65 Ultra Cameo. Ice-white devices rise above the deeply mirrored fields. An untoned Gem with a penetrating strike and impressive eye appeal. A few tiny mint-made planchet flakes on the reverse and a pair of pinpoint marks on the portrait are barely worthy of mention.
Half Dollar PR66 Cameo. The radiant snow-white devices appear to merit an Ultra Cameo designation, but NGC has conservatively assessed this brilliant and immaculate premium Gem. The strike is not quite full on the right shield corner or the eagle's neck feathers, but the nearly all details of the design are fully delivered by the dies.
Morgan Dollar PR66 Cameo. This well struck premium Gem has a fully brilliant reverse, and the obverse exhibits faint apricot toning. Proof Cameo Gem Morgan Dollars are rare, impressive, and in great demand. A wispy vertical imperfection is concealed in the hair beneath the T in LIBERTY. 1875 20C Twenty Cent Piece--Laminated Plan Obverse--PR63 PCGS. A bright mint-made lamination travels in a straight line through the eleventh star and the 5 in the date. A crisply struck specimen with untoned centers and attractive peripheral golden-brown, aqua, and ruby hues. The devices possess moderate frost, although apparently not sufficient to achieve a Cameo designation from PCGS. A scarce proof type, struck only four years with the final two years in proof-only format.

Undated Drapery No Motto Seated Quarter--Struck 35% Off Center--XF40 PCGS. Struck off center toward 7 o'clock so no trace of the digits are on the coin. We do know this is a Philadelphia Mint product, as the mintmark area is clear, and there is no trace of the motto on the ribbon so we can be reasonably sure that this one was struck prior to 1866. The surfaces are light silver-gray in color and the strike is very sharp on LIBERTY. Identifiable by a nick on the left side of the rock (perhaps an ejection mark common to off center coins) and a very minor scratch close to the wing below IC of AMERICA. An impressive error for the specialist and very rare so dramatically off center.

2004-? 25C Texas Statehood Quarter--Double Struck, Second Strike 40% Off Center--MS64 PCGS. The first strike appears to be normal, however, the piece was not ejected from the dies after the first strike. It was struck a second time, 40% off center toward 4 o'clock, relative to the Statehood side. The second strike is centered at 4:30 relative to the Statehood side of the initial strike. The piece did not flip over between strikes. No planchet was fed between strikes, so no brockage or indent is present. Very rare, and one of only two known Texas errors to date.

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves Fine 15 ICG. B-12, BB-26, R.4. Die State II. The 1993 Bowers' Silver Dollar reference states that the majority seen do not have the bold vertical die crack through the 7 in the date, seen on this dove-gray representative. A small spot is beneath the A in STATES, but the only detectable marks are a pair of tiny rim nicks on the reverse at 1 o'clock and a subdued pinscratch near the eighth star. A nicely detailed example of this better die pairing, a change of pace from the usually encountered Bolender-5 Three Leaves marriage. (PCGS# 6852)

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves VF35 NGC. B-5, BB-27, R.1. Die State III. The bar behind the upper trailing hair curl waves a red flag to specialists for prompt attribution. Light dove-gray and olive hues embrace this nicely detailed example. A few faint slide marks are detected near Liberty's jaw, and the upper left reverse rim has inconsequential blemishes, but the general appearance is surprisingly unmarked for the grade. Struck for only two years, the 1795 Flowing Hair is requisite to early silver type sets, since the 1794 exceeds the budgets of most collectors. (PCGS# 6852)

This significant die state exhibits prominent mint-made clash marks of the eagle's wings on the obverse field that bookend the portrait of Liberty. A thickly hairlined slate-gray piece. Liberty's hair has pleasing definition, and the same can be said for the eagle's wing and tail feather detail. Adjustment marks on the obverse between 4 and 5 o'clock are very faint and of mint origin. A couple of small pits on the eagle's body, possibly on the planchet prior to the strike, are noted for pedigree purposes. Encapsulated in a green label holder. (PCGS# 6853)

A contact mark in Liberty's hair is the only mentionable post-production distraction, and there are several adjustment marks, also at the center of the obverse. Certainly a worthwhile specimen. 1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off Center XF45 PCGS. B-14, BB-51, R.2.Light silver with traces of luster in the protected areas. The reverse die shows minor clash marks from Liberty's drapery lines. Excellent surfaces that should please any seasoned numismatist. Identifiable by a minor rim nick below the 95.
The public failed to fully appreciate the Flowing Hair version of the 1794-5 dollars, so a new design was authorized and tradition states that this die pairing was the first produced. A new hub of the Draped Bust of Liberty was created, and on this die the engraver placed the hub too far to the left, so the coin appears unbalanced, with a tiny left obverse field and a huge right obverse field. The reverse design was changed too, with a smaller eagle perched on clouds surrounded by a wreath of olive and palm branches. A few years later, the reverse design was changed to incorporate the Great Seal, slightly revised to fit within the confines of a planchet. This coin would make a welcome addition to an advanced type collection. (PCGS# 96858)

1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters VF30 PCGS. B-4, BB-61, R.2. Easily distinguished by the die dot over the 1 in the date. The most common die marriage of the year, the present example, therefore, is a desirable Choice VF representative of the 1796 Draped Bust Dollar. This coin is mostly slate-gray in appearance, although we note lighter silver-gray accents on the highpoints on each side. Free of mentionable handling marks, both sides are uncommonly abrasion-free for an early Silver Dollar that saw this extensive circulation. Moderate wear is evenly distributed throughout.
