1793 1/2 C C-1, B-1, R.3. Die State 2--Corroded--NCS. VF Details. VG8 EAC. Forelock below IB; Period follows legend. HALF CENT is slightly weakened but still visible. Other characteristics of Die State 2 are no longer visible. The reverse is rotated clockwise approximately 30 degrees. Generally deep brown surfaces with considerable dark green corrosion on both sides. A heavy diagonal scratch inside the wreath extends up to OF. Each of the four 1793 Half Cent varieties are of approximately equal rarity.

Half Cents from the Reiver Collection are attributed according to references by Roger S. Cohen, Jr. and Walter Breen. Cohen's work is titled American Half Cents, the "Little Half Sisters," published in 1971 with a second edition in 1982. Breen's reference is Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857, published in 1983. Die states of the half cents are from The Half Cent Die State Book 1793-1857 by Ronald P. Manley, Ph.D., published in 1998, or from Breen's Encyclopedia, in which case they are labeled "Breen Die State" followed by a Roman numeral. Envelope Included. (PCGS# 1000)

Quality of the surfaces does not permit distinction between the two Breen die states. Lightly corroded dark brown surfaces with deep green color on both sides. The devices are lighter brown, resulting in a pleasing two-tone appearance. The date and LIBERTY are both completely legible. Like C-1, this variety is usually available only in lower grades.

Many of the Reiver coins were housed in white two-inch square envelopes with the pedigree recorded simply as a last name and a date. We have attempted to identify these pedigree sources more specifically, but in some cases their identities have alluded us.

This is the plate coin in the first edition of Cohen, although the plate suggests a much lighter appearing and less corroded example. Surface quality does not permit identification of the Breen die state. In addition to the heavy corrosion, there is evidence that the obverse rim has been lightly filed. Steel-brown surfaces with intermingled olive and maroon color, the latter indicating some old, hard corrosion. Additional moderate to heavy corrosion is visible on both sides. What appears as a die crack on the reverse from below D to above the first S is actually a result of the corroded surfaces.

1793 1/2 C C-4, B-4, R.3. Die State 2. VF20 NGC. VG10 EAC. Forelock below LI; Long stems. A splendid example of the date and variety that exhibits lovely olive-brown color and very pleasing surfaces with only microscopic granularity. A few faint abrasions and old scratches are entirely blended into the surface and hardly deserve discussion. A couple small toning spots and splashes of darker brown color are visible on both sides. Die State 2 is identified by a small rust pit or die defect on the top edge of the 7, extending upward from the center of the top of this digit. It is present on this example, but somewhat obscured by minor verdigris in that area.

The recorded mintage of half cents in 1793 is 35,334 coins, and this figure is generally accepted as an accurate accounting of those coins actually bearing the 1793 date and design. These were struck from a combination of two obverse and three reverse dies. Walter Breen identified Adam Eckfeldt and Robert Birch as the engravers of the reverse dies, and possibly Birch as the engraver of the obverse dies as well. It is not known today just how accurate these identifications are, but many numismatic students have reason to doubt Breen's thoughts on this matter.

1794 1/2 C Large Edge Letters. C-1a, B-1a, R.2. Die State 3--Environmental Damage--NCS. XF Details. Fine 15 EAC. Large, high head; T in CENT leans right. Both sides have light porosity or corrosion, with traces of green and maroon color on the obverse. It appears that minor traces of glue residue in the right obverse field prompted the NCS description. The specific die state is not certain due to quality of the surfaces, however, State 3 seems to be most likely. This is one of the four most plentiful of all 1794 die varieties, although none are truly common. The other common varieties are C-2, 4, and 9, and these are the varieties most often chosen by type collectors. This first variety of the year has Large Edge Letters. Examples also exist with Small Edge Letters, but those are seemingly quite rare. Jules did not acquire an example of the Small Edge Letters subvariety.

The plate coin in the first edition of Cohen, and identified as such in that reference. The second S in STATES is weak, as usual for later die states. Medium brown surfaces, lighter on the devices, with minor granularity across both surfaces. A small amount of residue is visible along the reverse border above NI, and this is apparently the damage discussed by NCS. Beginning with this variety, standard issue was Small Edge Letters for every die variety through the end of the year. All varieties from C-2 through C-6 are also known with Large Edge Letters, and only C-2b can be found occasionally, although not offered herein. Jules did not seek out the various edge lettering differences. Breen Die State II as best we can determine.

1794 1/2 C Small Edge Letters. C-2a, B-2b, Low R.3. Die State 1. AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. Date closely spaced, 7 low; T in CENT leans left. The plate coin for the obverse on the Gilbert plate. Plated in Manley for the main illustration and also for State 1. Faint obverse clash marks. This is a solid Condition Census example of the variety and a spectacular coin with a pedigree to match. It is listed in the Breen Half Cent Encyclopedia as a conservative Extremely Fine, a grade that places it in a tie for fifth place in his Condition Census. The surfaces are smooth medium olive-brown with tinges of maroon. A few tiny marks are present, the only one of significance located between the forehead and TY, and even this is quite small. Ron Manley noted the disagreement between Breen and Cohen regarding the number of berries in the right branch of the wreath. Manley agreed with the Cohen count of four berries. This example clearly shows the "fifth berry" described by Breen, which is nothing more than a lump on the outer edge of the leaf whose tip is below the F in OF. This cataloger agrees with Manley and Cohen, suggesting that this small lump hardly constitutes a berry.

Jules Reiver purchased the Bareford Collection of Half Cents, and sold many of them afterward, keeping only those special pieces that he wanted for his own collection. Several of the pedigree chains in Breen that end with the Harold Bareford - William Bareford link will be found in this offering of coins from the Reiver Collection.

Earlier from the Hillyer Ryder Sale by New Netherlands. Their description may prove to be instructive to present day readers: "Delicately mottled in several shades of light brown. A nice half cent, evenly centered, and displaying light, gradual wear upon both sides. Careful examination reveals a small obverse nick under Y of LIBERTY, and another, upon the reverse over L of HALF. This is quite a scarce variety, considered R.6 by Cohen and Breen, and Low R.5 currently, with an estimated population of about 60 coins. The fields are dark brown with lighter olive-brown devices, an attractive two-tone example. Several light scratches cross Liberty's bust and neck, but these have been there for a long time and are completely blended in with the rest of the coin. They are also light enough that they did not prevent NGC from certifying this rare variety. Despite the low overall condition, this is an excellent opportunity for the variety collector to cross another one off his or her want list.

1794 1/2 C Small Edge Letters. C-4a, B-6b, R.3. Die State 3. XF40 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. High date, 9 low; Vertical leaf pair right of T. Extensive clash marks, die cracks, and bulges are seen on both sides of this near terminal example. This is the most common variety of the year, if any 1794 Half Cent can be considered common. Only the light die crack through M of AMERICA, described by both Breen and Manley, is not visible on this example. This is a lovely olive-brown coin with only a few minor surface marks on each side. Most prevalent is a flaw at Y of LIBERTY. The reverse has minor verdigris only. Although not in the Condition Census for the variety, we suspect that this example is not far away. Breen Die State VI.

There is no evidence on either side to suggest that the dies have clashed. The obverse has old cuts or wide scratches below ERT and at the upper right rim. The reverse rim has been lightly filed, and a few minor scrapes are pale orange in color, having been toned down slightly from their bright orange metallic copper appearance. We disagree with the NCS opinion that this example has been improperly cleaned. Aside from the orange color of the scrapes on the reverse, there is no evidence on either side that indicates improper or even proper cleaning.

Had the surfaces of this example been smooth and free of defects, this would easily be in the Condition Census, probably second finest known. Both Cohen and Breen considered this variety R.6, although more recently Manley indicated that about 35 examples are known. Breen Die State III.

1794 1/2 C Small Edge Letters. C-7, B-7, High R.5. Die State 2--Damaged--NCS. VF Details. Good 5 EAC. High relief head; Vertical leaf pair below T. The die state is early in the Manley State 2 progression, and appears to qualify as Breen Die State II. A die crack through the E of UNITED has separated the reverse die into two different planes, almost suggesting a retained cud. The surfaces have intermingled dark olive and steel-brown color with numerous small abrasions, pit marks, and other blemishes, including a rather prominent old scratch through the digit 1 to the bust. The lower reverse shows a very slight bend. Breen listed 14 entries in his Condition Census, the final entry reading "Richard Shimkus collection. Very Fine." We do not know if he was referring to this coin or a different specimen. A number of examples have been discovered over the years. Cohen rated this R.6 and said it was almost R.7. Breen called it R.6 with 24 reported, stating that it may go down to R.5. More recently, Ron Manley rated the variety R.5, in this instance proving the forward thinking of Walter Breen.

Manley recorded this as state 1, with no evidence of a crack that later appeared through the second T of STATES. This appears to be Breen Die State II, but may possibly be his state III. The reverse is rotated a few degrees counterclockwise. Centering on the obverse is excellent while the reverse is slightly off to the right, with a wide left side border over UNITED ST. At the right reverse, the border is essentially gone. Although not a Condition Census candidate, this example is much nicer than most of the variety. The surfaces are pleasing chocolate-brown with only the usual circulation marks associated with the grade. Breen Die State II.

1794 1/2 C Small Edge Letters. C-9, B-9, R.2. Die State 3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. VG10 EAC. High relief head; T in CENT leans left. The obverse is the same as C-7 and C-8 with the hair in a distinctive high relief, also the first point to show wear. The reverse is typically weaker than the obverse. The dentils to the left of the fraction have merged together into a minor rim break. Walter Breen identified a later die state (his IV) with a die crack through the tops of IBERTY on the obverse. However, this crack appears on earlier die states as well.

This is the second most common variety of 1794. Even in higher grades there are a number of examples reported. The surfaces are light olive-brown with hints of green coloration around the devices, the latter not from corrosion. The surfaces have the usual quota of abrasions and other minor marks. A few old scratches are visible on both sides, but they are nicely blended with the rest of the coin and don't stand out. Perhaps cleaned at one time, but now attractively toned and certainly desirable. Breen Die State III. Envelope Included. (PCGS# 1003)

1795 1/2 C Lettered Edge. C-1, B-1, Low R.3. Die State 2. XF45 NGC. VF20 EAC. With pole; Leaf point above F. A small reverse rim break connects three dentils above ED. The swelling at AME is barely visible. This Lettered Edge variety is popular and always in demand. Quite a few higher grade examples survive to satisfy the needs of type and date collectors. Despite the relatively high census, attractive and problem-free examples of any grade are hard to locate. Attractive dark chocolate surfaces have a few light bumps and bruises as expected for the grade. None of these are individually significant. Remaining detail on both sides suggest a good overall strike, and full borders on both sides are the result of excellent centering. In the Wyatt catalog, this coin was described as light brown and highly attractive with smooth and glossy surfaces. The cataloger for the Wyatt Sale graded it a conservative Fine 12! The stricter grading standards employed by EAC members suggest a grade in the range of Fine 12 to VF20. Breen Die State IV.

This is one of the two rarest 1795 Half Cents along with C-2b (not represented in the Reiver Collection). Today there are probably not more than 35 examples known. The central reverse is extremely weak with only H and C visible, and this is more a result of the late die state than a result of wear. While not a Condition Census example, the present coin is finer than most that we have seen. Very similar in overall grade and appearance to the plate coin in the first edition of Cohen, although not the same coin. Light olive surfaces with some darker greenish verdigris around the devices. A few faint hairlines are visible along with other minor blemishes. Still and all, a highly attractive example of this important rarity.

This is the common Plain Edge, Punctuated Date variety, and it is usually available in any grade short of Very Fine. On this example, most of HALF CENT is obliterated due to the die state, and light bulges are visible in the right obverse field. The surfaces have minor verdigris, and a couple small rim bumps are visible. Intermingled chestnut and steel-brown with mahogany color. Liberty and the cap are both slightly green in appearance with a few faint old scratches. Overall, this is still a pleasing and desirable example of the type.

1795 1/2 C Lettered Edge, Punctuated Date. C-2a, B-2a, High R.3. Die State 1. VF35 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. Punctuated date; Leaf point above F. This single die marriage encompasses the Punctuated Date, Lettered Edge coins as listed in the Guide Book. This same obverse and reverse die marriage was later used to produce a limited number of Punctuated Date, Plain Edge coins on lighter and thinner planchets. This is the earliest die state that we have seen for this variety, with no evidence of the bulge that developed quite early in the life of this obverse die. A faint crack over OF and between F and A appears to be present, but requires some imagination to make out. Ron Manley considers this to be an extremely rare die state. Exceptionally pleasing with light chocolate brown surfaces enhanced by hints of olive and mahogany coloration. Both obverse and reverse are remarkably free of any type of problems. A few faint, old scratches were mentioned in the Superior catalog of the Woods Collection, and these are hardly of any significance. They are nicely blended with the rest of the coin, and essentially invisible without a good magnifying glass. Breen Die State I.

This example is listed in Walter Breen's Half Cent Encyclopedia as number six in his Census, graded Extremely Fine, Cleaned. His "Missouri Cabinet" is the pseudonym of R. Tettenhorst. All examples of this die variety are essentially the same die state, although Breen listed both early and late states of the dies. Myriad tiny surface marks are visible only with magnification in most instances. Nearly all of these abrasions are from the planchet prior to striking. In the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia on page 833 is a enlarged picture of an amazing Mint State double struck and off center 1794 large cent. Examination of the unstruck portion will reveal exactly what these tiny surface marks look like. Both sides have lovely olive-brown color with hints of blue toning and reddish undertones. Those undertones are not faded mint red as Stack's suggested in 1978. In the beginning of the half cent section in that April 1978 catalog, Stack's mentioned that many of the half cents and large cents were either dipped or cleaned. Fortunately, in this case, the end result is a highly appealing coin.

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge. C-5b, B-5b, R.4. Die State 1--Environmental Damage--NCS. AU Details. Fine 15 EAC. No pole; No berries at ribbon bow. 108.6 grains. Reportedly, all examples of this variety were struck on planchets cut down from spoiled cents; however, very few exhibit evidence of a large cent undertype. Ron Manley suggested that they may have been struck on cut down planchets that had minor clips, cracks, or other damage. The obverse has reddish-brown and maroon color with several green pit spots. The reverse has intermingled steel and olive-brown color with minor verdigris. While this example is not in the Condition Census, it is far finer than most, even with its minor imperfections. The reverse has the constantly seen diagonal crack that nearly bisects the die, with the area below the crack on a higher plane than the upper part.

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge. C-6a, B-6c, R.2. Die State 1. AU55 NGC. VF35 EAC. No pole; Berry left of ribbon bow. 81.3 grains. This is the single most common half cent variety of the Liberty Cap design. An early die state that does not show any evidence of the usual light bulge along the obverse border to the right of Y. Struck on cut-down token stock with evidence of undertype visible at the upper reverse near ES OF. Additional traces of the undertype can be seen over TED. We have not specifically identified the undertype, but it does look much like a 1794 T.A.L. Cent. There is some disagreement as to how these were produced. Walter Breen felt that the former Talbot, Allum & Lee coppers were cut-down and struck without any other modification. Cohen and Manley both wrote that the tokens were rolled-out first to make them thinner, then cut-down and struck. This seems reasonable, except for the existence of pieces that have been seen with token undertype that has not been elongated or deformed from the rolling process. The surfaces have intermingled olive and steel-brown color with faint traces of remaining luster. Both sides have a few moderate blemishes with additional minor abrasions.

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge. C-6a, B-6a, R.2. Die State 2--Corroded--NCS. VG Details. Good 5 EAC. No pole; Berry left of ribbon bow. 78.0 grains. On his envelope, Jules Reiver recorded the notation "O RB Date" or Obverse Rim Break at the Date. This is one of the few instances where our opinion differs from that of Jules. We believe that the ridge below the date is a result of the corrosion, and not an actual rim break. Moderately corroded surfaces have dark steel color with lighter brown devices.

1796 1/2 C With Pole. C-2, B-2, R.4. Die State 1--Corroded--NCS. AG Details. AG3 EAC. With pole; Triplet at F (although not visible on this example). 69.8 grains. Only one die state is listed by Manley. The surfaces are too rough to determine the Breen Die State. This date is the key to the entire series of business strike half cents, and it is always in demand, regardless of grade. All of the basic obverse design is visible with a partially defined rim. Only the left side of the reverse is visible, from the wreath outward. Triple leaf clusters beneath both IT and ED, along with a berry next to the upper triplet provide conclusive evidence that this is from 1796 half cent dies, and is not a 1795 with a distorted date. The surfaces are heavily porous, causing some of the remaining details to be slightly distorted. Both sides are generally dark olive-brown with lighter brown color on those devices that remain.
