1793 Chain 1C AMERICA XF45 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-2, Die State II, R.4. This variety is actually scarcer than the S-1 variety, but of course, not nearly as popular. Only 4,850 pieces are believed to have been struck from the March 1 delivery. This example is among the top couple dozen survivors for the variety, a fully acceptable example for the advanced cent collector. Two shallow scratches are seen on the obverse and there is a small rim bump at 7 o'clock. A couple of shallow planchet flaws are also located in the right obverse field, as coined. The color is a glossy light brown with blue intermixed, forming a desirable woodgrain pattern.

1793 Chain 1C AMERICA XF40 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-3, Die State I, Low R.3. This is an early die state without any indication of clash marks near Liberty's face. The S-3 Chain cent is the most plentiful of all five die marriages for the design, an ideal choice for the date or type collector. Despite the relatively common nature of this variety, it is difficult to find in higher grades. Well defined for a Chain cent with especially strong definition on the reverse. The surfaces display an attractive blend of medium and dark brown color, and are smooth and natural. Surface imperfections are minimal for the grade with the only notable ones being a very shallow scratch from the nose of Liberty back into the cheek (just barely detectable without a glass), and a few tiny abrasions scattered over the obverse. A tiny rim bruise over E of UNITED on the reverse is almost invisible in the holder. An exceptional Chain cent.

1793 Chain 1C Periods VG8 NGC. VG10 EAC. S-4, Die State III, High R.3. This is a late die state with a tiny chip in the obverse die at the lower left, where two cracks join the border. In a letter to Mark Borckardt quoted in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia, Harry Salyards explained his opinion that the Periods die variety may have been executed by Joseph Wright as "the treatment of the hair at the brow and temple is more like that on several of the Wreath cent dies than either the strange receding hairlines of the other Chain cents, or Wright's 'boundary wave' on the Liberty Caps." Probably more than 8,800 pieces were struck of this variety from the March 8-12 deliveries, according to Walter Breen's research. The obverse shows three shallow, curved scratches from behind Liberty's nose down almost to the rim below. Also, there is a long, angling mark in the exergual area above the date, and a couple of minor planchet flaws in the right obverse field. The reverse has a slight streaky granularity that is barely noticeable to the unaided eye. Medium brown coloration over each side.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--VF Details NCS. Fine 12 EAC. S-11b, R.4. Distinguished from its S-11a and S-11c counterparts by the presence of two leaves on the lettered edge. Possibly 2,500 to 3,000 pieces out of the 11,825 cents delivered on July 6 were of this sub-variety. Breen speculated that the change to the Lettered Edge might distinguish the Watson & Greenleaf copper shipment from earlier sources. The May 16 Watson & Greenleaf shipment totaled 11,294 pounds of copper. Very scarce in high grades, this coin easily has the sharpness of a VF20 coin, but the surfaces are dark with uniform evidence of corrosion and light burnishing. The central reverse is noticeably weak, indicating a later die state, although the porosity prevents an exact die state determination. NCS Corroded.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Lettered Edge--VG8 NGC. VG10 EAC. S-11c, R.3. This example appears to be either Die State II or III. Similar to the Lettered Edge 11b variety, but on this variant only one leaf is seen on the edge. Walter Breen's research suggested that over half of the 11,825 cents delivered on July 6 were examples of this sub-variety. Many 11c cents were struck on highly defective planchets. This piece shows numerous small planchet voids, but nothing else in the way of Mint-made defects. Numerous small abrasions are also peppered over each side. Deep brown color is seen over both obverse and reverse with faded striking details around the margins.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--VG Details NCS. Good 4 EAC. S-5, Low R.4. This appears to be an early die state, although the quality prevents an exact determination. The S-5 is "sometimes called the most beautiful Wreath cent," according to Sheldon. The only possible challenger is the more common S-9 variant. Even on this heavily worn and porous example, the well formed and well spaced leaves above the date are apparent. This is the only Wreath cent variety with large letters in LIBERTY. As always on this variety, the date is more heavily worn than the other design elements. Porosity is seen over each side and there are also several shallow scratches on each side. A couple of minor rim dings are also present. The deep brown surfaces are lightly accented by reddish-brown highlights. NCS Corroded, Scratched.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--VF25 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. S-6, Die State I, R.3. The well-known "Sprung Die" obverse is always seen with some degree of bulge or convexity in the left obverse field, although this is an early die state with little evidence of the bulge. This variety apparently formed some 7,500 to 8,000 of the 12,000 cents struck between April 4 and 9 and delivered on the latter day, according to Walter Breen. This is a pleasing, glossy, light brown example that has modest amounts of reddish-brown and steel-gray color interspersed. Evenly worn from side to side, the only mentionable defects are a few small planchet flakes out of both obverse and reverse and three tiny planchet defects on the rims: one at 6 o'clock on the obverse, the other two at 3 and 4 o'clock on the reverse, the latter close to a tiny rim bump.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--Fine Details NCS. VG8 EAC. S-7, Die State IV, Low R.6. Probably no more than 700 pieces were struck of this variety and delivered April 13, the die failure on the lower obverse most likely accounting for its rarity. This is a later die state, one where the dot over the I in LIBERTY no longer shows. Heavy die failure is seen through the 179 of the date. Even though not present on this coin, the dot on the unique early die state of S-7 is taken as proof that the engraver used a twin punch to make the border beads. This piece has even, glossy, dark brown surfaces. Noticeable porosity is seen over each side with a tiny planchet flake out of the obverse on the upper portion of Liberty's neck, and a larger flake out of the reverse over the lower portion of the C in CENT. This is tied for 12th finest known of the variety. NCS Corroded.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--VG10 NGC. VG8 EAC. S-8, Low R.3. This appears to be an earlier die state, although wear obscures some details. Walter Breen estimated a mintage of slightly more than 8,000 coins, suggesting that most were struck June 27-28. He also compared the reverse to the second reverse of the 1793 half cents. Breen believed that both reverse dies may have been made at the same time. This cent has sepia-brown surfaces with very faint porosity and a few tiny rim bruises.

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--Fine Details NCS. VG8 EAC. S-9, R.2. The most frequently encountered of Wreath cents, the S-9 is easily identified by the stem of the sprig which parallels the top of the date on the obverse and the kidney-shaped bow on the lower reverse. This later die state shows evidence of die failure on the lower reverse. The surfaces on this piece are uniformly porous, except above the N in ONE where it is significantly heavier. A very light rim bruise is located on the obverse between 2 and 3 o'clock, and there is a faint series of three shallow scratches to the right of the second S in STATES. Each side has deep steel-gray and brown patina. NCS Corroded.

The sharpness is slightly finer than the net grade, but the surfaces are lightly porous and there are three or four tiny planchet voids visible with magnification. Even steel-brown coloration. 1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--VG8 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-11a, Die State I, High R.4. The Vine and Bars edge device distinguishes the S-11a from its 11b and 11c counterparts. Only 1,500 to 2,000 pieces are believed to have been struck (on June 29 according to Walter Breen). The 11a is often found struck on a defective planchet, as is the case with this coin. A delicate planchet defect is located in the right obverse field at 4 o'clock, and there are several scratch-like planchet depressions on the lower reverse. A tiny rim bruise is present on the obverse at 4 o'clock. Several short scratches are located at the juncture of Liberty's hair and truncation of the neck. A light, vertical planchet depression is also seen in that same area that at first appears to be a scratch. Attractive light tan and darker brown color over each side.

1793 1C Liberty Cap Good 4 NGC. VG7 EAC. S-12, Die State III, Low R.6. The lower numeric grade assigned by NGC is no doubt due to the considerable weakness on the reverse, resulting from the original production of these coins. This rare Liberty Cap cent is distinguished by the L in LIBERTY almost touching the beads, two beads over the I in LIBERTY, and a high center reverse. The latter characteristic one has to take on faith on this piece as the center of the reverse is essentially devoid of details as the coin was struck from a later die state. Only two reverse dies were used for all the 1793 Liberty Cap cents. This reverse is most easily identified by a single leaf below OF. The other reverse has a triplet at this location. This variety was discovered by William Fewsmith in October 1869, and it is thought that about 800 pieces were struck. Sheldon commented at length on the lack of reverse details and speculated that, "The defect in the die possibly accounts for the shortness of its life, or the paucity of its use." Unlike many of the known examples of this variety, this piece shows little of the streakiness seen on the flan of many S-12s. A spidery planchet crack is seen from the obverse rim at 3 o'clock into the eye of Liberty, and another shorter crack crosses Liberty's nose. Moderate porosity is seen in the fields where deeper brown color can also be seen, while the highpoints have a lovely deep tan patina. Sheldon commented, "probably just about 20 examples of this aristocrat of cents are known." Today, closer to 30 examples of this variety are known. Sheldon gave a similar aristocratic title to the 1793 S-15, discussed below.

1793 1C Liberty Cap VG Details NCS. Good 6 EAC. S-13, High R.3. Darwin Palmer's poll of EAC members revealed that they rated the S-13 as the most beautiful of all 1793 varieties. Even though this is a heavily worn example, it is still easy to see how the members came to this conclusion with Liberty's head well formed and rounded. The medium brown surfaces show slight roughness, but for the grade the coin is relatively clean with a few old scratches and a minor rim mark at 11 o'clock. NCS Obverse Scratched.

1793 1C Liberty Cap VF20 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. S-13, High R.3. Formerly certified VF20 by PCGS. On this higher graded example it is easy to discern the inherent beauty of the design, engraving, and die cutting of the S-13. This variety is the most plentiful of the '93 Caps and is an ideal choice for the collector seeking a single representative. Walter Breen estimated that at least 7,000 examples were struck, over half the entire mintage of 1793 Liberty Cap large cents. All 11,056 Liberty Cap cents were delivered from the coiner on September 18, 1793, just a week after designer Joseph Wright passed away. The surfaces are deep brown and olive with underlying traces of red coloration apparent over the devices. Each side shows light porosity, scattered small planchet flakes, and several light scratches (apparent only with a magnifier). The only rim bumps we see are located on the reverse at 3 and 4 o'clock. This '93 Cap cent is far finer than the typical 1793 Liberty Cap cent surviving today.

1793 1C Liberty Cap Fine 12 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-14, Die State II, Low R.5. The "Cracked Die" Liberty Cap cent--one of the few early large cents that is easily attributable "across the room" as the vertical, rim-to-rim die crack is so pronounced from the E in LIBERTY to the right of the 3 in the date. This is an early die state with no evidence of die clashing. As one might expect, this variety was an early discovery, being first reported by Reverend J. Finotti before 1862. Breen speculates that fewer than 2,000 pieces were struck. Sheldon believed since no examples are known of this variety without the die crack, it may have occurred during the making of the die itself, perhaps during the hardening process. The surfaces are medium brown and close examination reveals a number of tiny planchet voids on each side. The striking definition is, of course, somewhat irregular with light detailing on the upper right portion of the reverse. A couple of almost undetectable semi-circular scratches are seen on the left side of the reverse. As for other post-striking defects, four small rim bumps are located on the obverse with a couple of rim nicks on the reverse rim, and there is a small area of reddish discoloration over IC in AMERICA on the reverse.

1793 1C Liberty Cap Fine Details NCS. VG8 EAC. S-15, Low R.7. Only 12 pieces are known of this rarity, the finest in the ANS, and most have significant defects. This piece is slightly sharper than the stated grade but, as expected, there are several abrasions, rim nicks, and planchet voids on each side. The planchet quality is actually quite pleasing overall, requiring close examination to see the microscopic roughness on the obverse. The date is clear as are the other legends except, of course, ONE CENT, which is non-existent because of the swelling always seen in the central reverse. Sheldon waxed poetic about this variety, calling it, "The aristocrat of the Liberty Cap cents, and therefore an aristocrat of aristocrats among the Large cents." See also the 1793 S-12 above, for a similar title by Dr. Sheldon. Tied for third finest known. NCS Damaged.

1793 1C Liberty Cap Fine Details NCS. VG8 EAC. S-16, R.6. While a rare variety in its own right with its distinctive heavy hooked point on the lowest lock, this is also a famous (or would it be infamous?) example of this variety. It is plated in both versions of Sheldon, Early American Cents, and Penny Whimsy. It was described as, "with a heavy break, or failure of the die, between the chin and the border, measuring about 4 x 5 mm." However, it proved to be a lamination defect in the planchet, not a die break. The surfaces are dark and glossy with microscopic porosity on each side. Deep chocolate brown patina is seen in most of the fields and within the recesses with lighter reddish-tan accents over the highpoints. Each side also has several rim bumps. The lamination is truly spectacular and is the first piece listed in the "Oops!" chapter in the Breen big copper reference (pg. 834). Tied for fourth finest known out of a total population in the neighborhood of 20 coins. NCS Obverse Planchet Flaw.

1794 1C Head of 1793 VF Details NCS. Fine 15 EAC. S-17a, Die State III, Low R.5. Edge Style of 1793. The sharpness grade approximates VF25. Maris called this the "Tilted 4" variety, but Sheldon thought a better description would be the "Wide Straight Date." Dr. Edward Maris published a monograph on the 1794 cents in 1869, with a second edition in 1870. In these references, he provided fanciful names for each of the varieties that he described. This is one of the most popular and easy to recognize of all 1794s and it is also one of the most difficult to locate problem-free. As with most S-17a cents, this piece displays streaky coloration, most likely from the last of the Gourdon copper used in the previous year. Moderate porosity is seen on the obverse, and there is evidence of light planchet flaking as well. There are several small to medium sized edge nicks, most of which are on the obverse. Sixth finest known for the variety. NCS Environmental Damage.

1794 1C Head of 1793 Fair 2 NGC. AG3 EAC. NC-4, R.8. Edge Style of 1794. There are two different edge devices known for the 1794 cents with Head of 1793. Each has a single leaf after the word DOLLAR. On the 1793 style edge type, this leaf points down in relation to the word DOLLAR, and on the 1794 edge type, this leaf points up. Just two examples of this sub-variety have been identified, the first being recognized by C. Douglas Smith in 1950 after purchasing the coin in a 1949 auction. A few nearly invisible scratches are noted, and small flaws in the flan are visible left of the date. The surfaces have dark brown color with hints of olive and tan.

1794 1C Head of 1793 VF25 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-18a, Die State II, R.6. This rare Head of '93 variety was called the "Double Chin" by Sheldon, as it is almost an exact replica of Obverse 12 (from 1793) but it has a pronounced double chin. The surfaces are non-porous but do show some planchet roughness, and there are numerous small, but individually insignificant abrasions on each side. The obverse has slightly mottled light and darker brown patina. This is the third finest of a very rare sub-variety and a great prize for the 1794 specialist.

A few small planchet flakes are also noted and the reverse shows more porosity than the obverse. Deep chocolate brown patina overall with somewhat lighter accents over the highpoints of the devices. 1794 1C Head of 1793 VF Details NCS. VF20 EAC. S-19a, Die State I, High R.5. This "Double Chin" variety was characterized by Maris as having the "ugly tooth" reverse, as the denticles are long and heavy with sharp points. Perhaps not the most endearing of descriptions, but the desirability of this variety is derived from its rarity and not superior die engraving. The surfaces are bright from burnishing and dark brown overall, as one would expect from the crude, darker planchets used on this variety. Lightly abraded with traces of corrosion on the lower reverse. With these imperfections, which sound worse than they look, this cent remains tied for the third finest known of the variety. It was pointed out in the Ruttenburg catalog that this particular coin has a blundered edge reading: ONE HUNDREDED FOR A DOLLAR. We aren't certain the second E is actually present, something is there but it may just be a couple of flaws in the planchet on the edge. NCS Corroded, Burnished.

1794 1C Head of 1793 XF40 NGC. VF25 EAC. S-19b, Die State I, High R.4. Edge Style of 1794. Another "Double Chin" variant, this one with the point and stem of the leaf after DOLLAR pointing up on the edge. Discovered before 1869 by Dr. Maris. This piece has the sharpness of a VF35 coin, but is downgraded by a few shallow slide marks on the obverse, and each side shows the normal light abrasions one associates with a VF coin. Struck on a natural, lightly colored planchet with no obvious evidence of porosity. A very attractive example of the variety with light olive and reddish-brown color.

1794 1C Head of 1793 Fine 12 NGC. VG10 EAC. S-20(b), Die State II, R.4. Edge Style of 1794. An earlier die state that shows no trace of die rust on the left portion of the wreath and only a faint bulge on the lower right of the obverse. This is an atypically nice coin for the variety (and grade) as the planchet is not unduly dark or crude as usually seen. This S-20 variety is not rare, with over 100 examples known; however, nearly all are low grade. In fact, the top dozen examples drop down to the Fine 12 grade level. The coin appears to have been struck from a reverse die that was slightly out of alignment, as the left portion of that side is not as well defined as the right side. Otherwise, the only other mentionable defects are a few light scratches in the center of the obverse, a more noticeable one on the lower left of that side, and a slight planchet lamination on the lower reverse rim.
