1845-O AU 50 PCGS. A scarcer date among O-mint tens and usually not located finer than XF. Coins in AU are rated a low to mid-R.7 with an estimated 8-10 pieces known. The medium green-gold surfaces are peppered with numerous small abrasions, the largest of which is a long scrape in the left obverse field and a couple of nicks to the right of the second S in STATES. Well struck. (PCGS# 8593)

1876 AU 55 NGC. A second example of this important rarity in the ten-dollar Liberty series. Tied with the previous lot for finest certified, and we would assume also tied for finest known. The fields on this piece are nowhere near as reflective as they are on the previous lot, yet they do show a bright, semi-prooflike glimmer. Well struck but not showing quite full detailing, with just a bit of highpoint definition missing on the hair curl over Liberty's ear. The surfaces show a bright yellow-gold color with a few more obvious abrasions scattered about. The most noticeable marks for tracing the pedigree of this important coin are: a long scratch along the baseline of the truncation of the neck, three short nicks in the left obverse field in front of the neck, and a nick in front of the nose on the obverse. A very rare opportunity to select between two examples of this very rare, key issue. (PCGS# 8674)

1878-S XF 40 PCGS. A third example of this scarce With Motto eagle. This piece is similar to the other XF 40 in that both are unquestionably original, untampered coins. The surfaces have a pronounced reddish-coppery tone with "dirty gray" patina overlaid on the devices. A bit softly struck in the centers with less detailing on the peripheral stars. (PCGS# 8682)

1915-S Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal MS 64 NGC. A satiny, original green-gold example, brightly lustrous and void of the often-seen distractions incurred on this soft, heavy, and always impressive numismatic prize. Struck on the eve of America's involvement in the First World War, the Greek helmet is pushed back on Liberty's head in a ready but not fully combative posture. The owl on the reverse signifies watchfulness. Minted in slightly larger numbers than the round commemorative of similar design (645 vs. 483 pieces), the equally massive octagonal piece adds dolphins about the borders symbolizing America's desire to keep the Panama Canal open throughout the term of the Great War. (PCGS# 7452)

1652 Pine Tree Shilling MS 60. Noe-1. A pleasing, rare, mint state example of this early silver issue struck in the large planchet format. Attractive medium-gray surfaces with some multicolored, iridescent overtones. The tree and date are exceptionally bold. A slight planchet clip shows at 6 o'clock and the coin was slightly buckled at striking, a normal occurrence for this issue. Mint state examples are exceedingly rare. Listed on page 18 of the 1996 Guidebook. (PCGS# 652)
