1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, Punctuated Date, C-2, B-2 -- Damage -- PCGS Genuine. Good Details. Ex: Jon D. Lusk Collection. 103.8 grains. This important half cent is an example of C-2a based on its weight. However, PCGS describes this piece as a Plain Edge and that is technically correct as the edge is unlettered. Roger S. Cohen, Jr. mentioned this coin in the second edition of American Half Cents: "In August 1974 Jon Lusk discovered a specimen of this variety on which the edge lettering had been omitted. As of this writing the coin is unique." Ed Fuhrman illustrated this piece on page 191 of The Half Cent Handbook, Liberty Cap Varieties 1793-1797 where he states that it is unique.

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, Punctuated Date--30% Off-Center with 25% Curved Clip--Corroded, NCS. XF Details. C-4, B-4, R.3. Usual die state with HALF CENT mostly illegible. This is a stunning and spectacular double error, either of which would be extremely important in its own right. The substantial curved clip is positioned at 4 o'clock. This clip is larger than any we recall seeing on a half cent of any date, let alone this 18th century date. Similarly, the off-center strike, positioned to 9 o'clock, is further off-center than we recall on any other examples. The combination is nothing short of amazing. Any combination of two or more error types on a single coin essentially makes that coin unique. It is completely unreasonable to think that another identical error combination could have been produced, unless someone at the Mint was making these intentionally, and during the 1790s, that was probably not the case.

The surfaces are lightly corroded. The obverse has charcoal-brown and deep green color, with mostly deep green on the reverse. A few old obverse scratches are so nicely blended with the rest of the coin that they are not immediately obvious. EAC 12. (PCGS# 1012)

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, Punctuated Date VF35 PCGS. C-4, B-4, R.3. Manley Die State 2.0 with a prominent bulge on the right obverse field and die sinking throughout HALF CENT. This medium brown Choice VF example is unusually void of scratches, carbon, and verdigris. Due to the quality of planchet, the obverse has numerous light fissures, and a few unimportant fissures are also present on the reverse periphery. EAC 12. (PCGS# 1012)

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, Punctuated Date VF20 PCGS. C-4, B-4, R.3. A lengthy and relatively thick die line between the 1 and 7 in the date confirms the obverse variety, and a leaf pair is located below the C in AMERICA on the reverse. The surfaces are a light brown, and imbued with subtle hints of olive. The design elements exhibit nice definition for the grade, though HALF is weak and CENT does not show, as is typical for the variety. The surfaces are relatively clean, though a small indentation within the upper part of the H in HALF is mentioned for accuracy. Overall, a very nice representative of this classic piece of Americana. 1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, Punctuated Date. C-3, B-3, High R.5. Die State 2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VG Details. Good 5 EAC. Punctuated date; Leaf point below top of F. This is one of the two rarest 1795 Half Cents along with C-2b (not represented in the Reiver Collection). Today there are probably not more than 35 examples known. The central reverse is extremely weak with only H and C visible, and this is more a result of the late die state than a result of wear. While not a Condition Census example, the present coin is finer than most that we have seen. Very similar in overall grade and appearance to the plate coin in the first edition of Cohen, although not the same coin. Light olive surfaces with some darker greenish verdigris around the devices. A few faint hairlines are visible along with other minor blemishes. Still and all, a highly attractive example of this important rarity.

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, Punctuated Date VG10 PCGS. B-4, C-4, R.3. A lengthy and relatively thick die line between the 1 and 7 in the date lends the nickname to this obverse variety. The surfaces are a warm light brown, and the design elements exhibit nice definition for the grade, though most of HALF CENT does not show, as is typical for the variety. Most of the dentilation shows on the obverse, as well along the right (facing) reverse border. The devices are relatively well centered on each side. A few small marks are scattered about the obverse, especially on Liberty's neck and in the left (facing) obverse field, and also in the reverse center. Overall, a very decent coin for a VG10. Population: 1 in 10, 7 finer (3/05). (PCGS# 1012)

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, Punctuated Date. C-4, B-4, R.3. Die State 2--Environmental Damage--NCS. VF Details. Fine 15 EAC. Punctuated date; No berries at ribbon bow. This is the common Plain Edge, Punctuated Date variety, and it is usually available in any grade short of Very Fine. On this example, most of HALF CENT is obliterated due to the die state, and light bulges are visible in the right obverse field. The surfaces have minor verdigris, and a couple small rim bumps are visible. Intermingled chestnut and steel-brown with mahogany color. Liberty and the cap are both slightly green in appearance with a few faint old scratches. Overall, this is still a pleasing and desirable example of the type.

1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, Punctuated Date--Flipover Double Struck--Damaged--ANACS. Fine Details. Net VG8. C-4, B-4, R.3. The most readily visible features of the double strike are on top of Liberty's cap on the obverse, with the letters AME clearly visible. Similarly, traces of the Liberty cap can be seen on the reverse at AME. Pleasing light to medium brown color with slight waves in the planchet. The surfaces are lightly scraped and scratched with evidence of light corrosion on the reverse. EAC 6. (PCGS# 1012)
