1796 1/2 C With Pole AU 55 NGC. B-2a, C-2, R.5. The official half cent mintage for 1796 is 115,480 pieces, a figure that would lead one to think that plenty of pieces should be extant for collectors today. However, calendar year production in the early days of the Mint included many coins struck from previous years' dies that were used until those dies wore out and were then replaced. Research over the past few decades indicates that only 1,390 half cents were actually produced with the 1796 date, and an estimated 100 pieces are thought to be extant today. Regardless of condition, the appearance of a 1796 half cent is an important event any time one crosses the auction block. The example we are now privileged to offer is surely among the top dozen or so pieces known. Unlike a large percentage of survivors, this remarkable coin appears to struck on a perfect, unspoiled planchet. The chestnut-brown surfaces are well detailed in all areas and totally without defects, being just a shade lighter in color in the more protected areas. Population: 1 in 55, 3 finer (9/00). 1796 1/2 C With Pole--Corroded--NCS. XF40 Details. C-2, B-2, High R.4. Only 1,390 pieces were struck of the No Pole and With Pole subtypes combined, making them the rarest of the early U.S. half cents. The noted corrosion is mostly fine-grained and microscopic, with all the major types clear save for LF and the N in CENT. The right wreath top is also a bit weak, and only about 30% of the dentilation is present. On the other hand, the smooth olive-brown surfaces show no singular abrasions. Overall a nice example, despite the NCS caveat, and one that should see spirited bidding. EAC 12. (PCGS# 1027)

1796 1/2 C With Pole Good 4 ANACS. C-2, B-2a, High R.5. This coin is a survivor from an original mintage of only 1,390 pieces. The 1796 has long been regarded as the key issue in the U.S. half cent series, and examples of both the No Pole and With Pole varieties are difficult to locate in any grade. This coin has some problems--the surfaces are dark, and the texture is rough with scattered pitting. Still, most of the focal features are evident, and the date is well defined. An important opportunity for the early copper specialist. EAC 4.

The 1796 half cent is a classic Early American rarity, and examples are eagerly pursued regardless of condition. Except for HALF CENT, all legends are legible, although the ATE in STATES is weak. The ebony-brown surfaces are finely granular and somewhat wavy. A moderate scratch crosses the worn central reverse. EAC 3. (PCGS# 1027)

1796 With Pole VF 20 Light Reverse Porosity. B-2a, C-2, R.5. A truly delightful example of this rare and sought-after variety. The porosity is very light, and is only cautionary as the coin is not at all displeasing in appearnce. Furthermore, the surfaces, rims, fields, and devices, are all nearly free of handling marks. Well struck on the obverse, the reverse is weak on HALF CENT, sharp everywhere else. Struck on a planchet which may have been something else, the only evidence is a small indentation above TATE of STATES, and some other similar vestiges along both the obverse and reverse rim. Planchet stock for half cents at the Philadelphia Mint was never great, and seemed to hit a new low in 1796. This topic has been the subject of many debates in the past, and with coins like this, one can see why; just enough evidence to raise the question and entice, but not enough to definitively put the matter to rest. The coin weighs in at 78.84 grains, a touch light from standard, perhaps from the limited wear. An exciting coin for an advanced half cent collection.

Edwards Copy of 1796 1/2 C With Pole Half Cent, MS64 Brown Uncertified. According to Richard Kenney in his study Struck Copies of Early American Coins (Wayte Raymond, 1952), Dr. Frank Smith Edwards of New York was a serious collector of U.S. coins in the years immediately preceding his death in 1865. His collection was sold by Bangs, Merwin & Co. in October 1865. His copy of the very rare 1796 With Pole Half Cent had a survival of twelve pieces, one of which appeared as lot 944 in an April 1866 sale and was purchased by Sylvester Crosby for $5.50. This well-made olive-brown piece features a prominent chin and a couple of an unimportant ticks in the right obverse field. (PCGS# 1027)
