1804 1/2 C Crosslet 4, With Stems. C-2, B-3, High R.6. Die State 3--Damaged--NCS. VF Details. VG8 EAC. Low 4, leans left; Close fraction, 00 joined. This variety was unknown to Gilbert, and was actually first discovered by Howard Hazelcorn as reported in the May 1968 issue of Penny Wise. A second example had been discovered by 1971, and four more by November 1977. Several more have been found since, and today this variety is considered High R.6 with possibly 15 or 16 examples known. This example is the latest of those known with the heavy rim break extending from the right top of E to the right top of Y. The additional obverse die crack is fully extended. Inexplicably graded AG3 in the Cohen catalog. Although we don't believe this coin has VF details as recorded by NCS, it is clearly finer than AG3, in our opinion. Perhaps VG8 is an appropriate compromise. Splendid olive-brown color with minor corrosion at the lower left obverse and a few hidden marks on the reverse, prompting the Damaged designation by NCS. Echoing the sentiments of the cataloger for Superior: "A coin for the connoisseur that has waited too long to find one unattributed."

1804 1/2 C Crosslet 4, With Stems. C-4, B-2, R.5. Die State 1. VG10 NGC. VG8 EAC. Low 4, leans left; Widest fraction. The earliest die state with the reverse crack ending at the left side of U. In the May 1997 issue of Penny-Wise, Ron Manley discussed the emission sequence of 1803 and 1804 half cents struck early in 1804. He proposed a new sequence, and explained that this 1804 C-4 variety was in fact the first Half Cent variety struck in 1804. Although lightly abraded with a few minor rim cuts, this is an exceptional example for the grade with wonderful surfaces and lovely mahogany coloration.
