1809 1/2 C Normal Date. C-1, B-2, Low R.5. Die State 2. XF45 NGC. VF20 EAC. Close date, 1 slightly high; High leaf left of right edge of S. The discovery coin for the variety and the Manley Plate Coin for Die State 1. This example was conservatively described as Fine in Walter Breen's Half Cent Encyclopedia. Breen listed it after the Norweb Collection coin, which he graded VF. That coin was later graded Fine in the Bowers and Merena sale catalog of the Norweb Collection (Part I, October 1987). Today, we believe that this example is sixth or seventh finest known of a total population in the vicinity of 50 coins. Several low-grade examples of this variety have been found in recent years, and it is actually possible that this die marriage may be closer to High R.4 by this time.

Clearly Die State 2 in both Manley and Breen with a crack through the tops of MERICA, heavy above MERI, and extending to the left top of M and into the field right of the final A, almost to the rim. Guide lines or die scratches remain visible between S and O, and between F and A. A tiny rim clip is visible near 12 o'clock on the obverse and 6 o'clock on the reverse. The obverse has a light but clear "inner circle" from 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock and from 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock, not described by any previous authors for either Cohen-1 or Cohen-2 to the best of our knowledge, both varieties sharing this obverse die. The inner circle was most likely a guide line for punching dentils into the die. Both sides have splendid olive-brown surfaces, slightly darker near the borders and slightly lighter on the devices. Moderate surface marks are visible on both sides, but none appear unusually large or distracting. This is a splendid example of the variety, one of only a few die marriages that were not known to Gilbert some 90 years ago.

1809 1/2 C Normal Date. C-2, B-3, Low R.3. Die State 2--Reverse Corroded--NCS. Unc Details. XF40 EAC. Close date, 1 slightly high; High leaf just beyond S, ES high. This is the Manley Plate Coin for the variety. Of the five 1809 half cent varieties that were known to Gilbert, this is clearly the most difficult to locate, and is especially so in higher grades. The Roger Cohen Collection, for instance, contained five examples of this variety, but only two reached the grade of Very Fine. There are currently only a couple truly Mint State examples known, despite six different coins recorded by Walter Breen.

The obverse is cracked through stars 9 to 13 and into the field below star 13. No other evidence of obverse die cracks appear on this example. Reverse weakness and light corrosion does not permit viewing of the small rim break in the dentils between D and S. Sharply detailed with pleasing olive coloration on both sides. Tinges of light gold have faded from red mint color. An obverse scratch starts at Liberty's chin and extends right through the hair curls to star 10. The reverse has considerable deep red color over ED STAT, from the removal of old corrosion. Specialists will want to consider this lot carefully, as similar quality examples will seldom appear on the market. Breen Die State IV.

1809 1/2 C Normal Date. C-6, B-6, R.1. Die State 5. MS64 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. Wide date, 0 low; High leaf midway between S and O. This is the Manley Plate Coin for State 5. Less than perfect centering and extremely weak border details on both sides essentially eliminates any observation of the rim breaks from the obverse die. This is one of the two most plentiful varieties of the year, along with Cohen-3, but high grade examples of this variety are still quite elusive. A fully detailed and highly lustrous steel-brown example with splashes of red mint color on the reverse. The reverse is rotated approximately 135 degrees counterclockwise.

Identifiable by a small nick along Liberty's lower cheek line, and slightly off-center on the reverse toward 12 o'clock. An opportunity for the advanced collector.

1809 1/2 C MS64 Brown PCGS. C-6, B-6, R.1. Star 9 is repunched; highest leaf ends midway between S and O. John Reich spent the first three years of his Mint employment working on new designs for all of the denominations that were in production at the time, starting with the half dollar and half eagle in 1807. His designs for the large cents and half cents, the well-known Classic Head design, were introduced in 1808 and 1809, respectively. Half cents of this design remained in production until 1836, while the large cents were replaced with a new design in 1816. Highly lustrous olive and tan surfaces with darker swirls of toning and considerable mint red color, mostly on the reverse. EAC 60.
