1826 1/2 C C-2, B-2, High R.3. Die State 4--Environmental Damage--NCS. AU Details. VF20 EAC. 6 over horizontal 6; High leaf below center of S. This is the extremely rare "two-star break" die state, and it is every bit as important as the 1811 two-star die state. Currently, there are seven examples known, and nearly all seem to be in approximately the same grade. Reading over the die state descriptions in Walter Breen's Half Cent Encyclopedia leaves the reader with the impression that the remnants of the horizontal 6 fade with die usage and wear. As the blundered date is equally visible here, the only factors eliminating the viewing of the blundered date are wear and surface quality.

This die state provides somewhat of a mystery, mentioned only in the Cohen Collection sale, and nowhere else to this cataloger's knowledge. Why did this rather large obverse rim break appear almost out of nowhere? There are not any examples of this variety known with any type of die crack in this area before the rim break appeared. In other words, this obverse die immediately progressed from perfect without cracks, to broken with a large cud. Superior's cataloger for the Cohen sale suggested that "perhaps some dolt dropped the obverse die after attempting yet another regrinding, or more likely, the obverse just gave way, breaking apart under the repeated striking pressures." We tend to think that the first suggestion is not all that likely, and that the second hypothesis is more logical.

This example has pleasing turquoise and brown color on the obverse and deeper olive-brown on the reverse. Although the surfaces are finely corroded, there are no serious defects to mention. This is an extremely important opportunity that will certainly provide for plenty of competition at the Reiver event.

1826 1/2 C C-1, B-1, R.1. Die State 3. MS65 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. Die lines right of 6; High leaf beyond S. The Manley Plate Coin for State 3. A relatively early die state with a crack from the border to star 1 and the bust, branching up to stars 2 and 3. Die lines above Liberty's head, as well as recutting on star 7, are both clearly visible. This common variety is also a mysterious one. The criss-cross die file lines right of the date have been a source of fascination for collectors over many years. Roger Cohen stated that "the reason for these marks can only be guessed as the removal of an extra numeral or star from the die." It is this suggestion that has remained foremost in collectors' minds for the past couple decades, until Ron Manley ventured out on shaky ground and actually suggested that these criss-cross lines cover up a stray "A" punch that would have otherwise been used for the reverse die. Earlier, this cataloger was of the opinion that these lines cover up a stray 6. After reading the opinion of Ron Manley, and studying this remarkable coin, I am ready to join him on that not-so-shaky ground.

This is an absolutely spectacular example with frosty luster and intermingled tan, brown, and olive color. Faded traces of original mint color remain on the reverse. A planchet flaw at the base of ME serves as an important pedigree identifier. Although the left side stars are flat, virtually all of the remaining details are bold and sharply rendered. Even though this is the most plentiful 1826 variety, and the only one that can be found in Mint State, it remains quite rare in such grades. The reverse is rotated about 15 degrees clockwise.
