1798 1C First Hair Style AU55 PCGS. S-157, B-15, R.2. Attractive light tan in color with a few darker splashes on the devices. The obverse and reverse have a few light planchet defects, including a shallow one over Liberty's eye. The reverse die was misaligned with the obverse, and is a couple of points off center, while the obverse is centered. Identifiable by a small nick crossing three of Liberty's curls above the 7 in the date and a very thin scratch from her hair below her ear to the field before her chin. The reverse is very attractive with even color and pleasing surfaces. We note a minor speck below the 00 in the fraction and some shallow scratches around the IT of UNITED. A couple of leaves are weakly struck, including the top left leaf which had the unfortunate location of being atop a very shallow planchet defect. (PCGS# 1431)

1798 1C First Hair Style. S-144, B-1, Low R.6--Corroded--NCS. Good Details. Good 6 EAC. Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia notes that this variety is usually found in low grades, on porous Coltman planchets. The present example is finely corroded, with black fields and lighter-colored devices. The surface quality prevents determination of the die state, but no reverse die cracks are visible. The surface erosion is worst at the center reverse, where ONE is illegible. The peripheral legends are strong on both sides, however, and the date, the closest-spaced among the 1798 varieties, is bold, with broad dentilation showing beneath it. There is an old, short gash just beneath the ribbon that blends with the fields. The Breen Encyclopedia enumerates only two examples of this variety in its expanded Condition Census of 16 coins (according to conservative EAC standards) that exceed a grade of Very Good 10.

Just missing the Condition Census for the variety, this example probably ranks about 20th on the roster of survivors. Olive and steel-brown color with traces of lighter tan. The design elements are mostly sharp, although some slight weakness is visible at the central reverse.

1798 1C First Hair Style AU50 NGC. VF25 EAC. S-145, Die State IV, R.3. This variety is usually identified at a glance, with a prominent die chip between the numerator and the ribbon knot. Although scarce at best, the Condition Census for this die combination is relatively low, with the finest known grading just XF45 according to EAC standards. This cent is in the Condition Census, tied for fourth finest known as graded by Del Bland, or tied for 10th finest known as graded currently. Del assigned a grade of VF35 to this cent. This is one of several Rasmussen cents from the Dupont Collection. The surfaces are slightly matte-like with medium brown color and olive accents. A few minor surface marks are visible, along with some faint corrosion. There appears to be a die chip in the right obverse field, at the approximate location of the die sinking described by Breen for his Die State V.

1798 1C First Hair Style XF40 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-146, Die State III, R.5. This is the fifth finest known example of the variety, the fourth finest in collector's hands, and just the second time that a top quality example of this die marriage has appeared for sale at auction. The third finest known, a VF30 coin, was sold in the November 1973 New Netherlands sale of the Naftzger duplicates. Among the top five examples, that is the only previous auction appearance. The current offering provides the specialist with an extremely important opportunity. Attractive olive-brown surfaces with some lighter reddish-tan and darker steel-brown color. A few light abrasions are present. This is a later die state from a twice lapped die, with the drapery and curls incomplete, the upper bust line weak, the shoulder loop absent, and the hair details at the top of Liberty's head mostly detached or missing.

1798 1C First Hair Style XF45 NGC. VF25 EAC. S-158. B-17, R.4. Die State V. The obverse has three long, nearly vertical, straight die cracks in the left field. On the reverse a crack runs from the T in UNITED, through the wreath and the second T in STATES, back to the rim. A nearby crack runs along the top crossbar of the I in UNITED, downward through the adjacent T and joins with the first crack below. In an early stage of this die state, the rim above T has broken and filled downward nearly to cover the top of that letter, but the rim break does not extend all the way back to the I. The area below T has filled downward to where the two cracks meet. A third crack merges the tops of CA with the denominator. This delectable, well defined coin reveals only small abrasions and scattered surface porosity under a glass on its medium-brown surfaces. An unusual opportunity to acquire a high-grade example of this very scarce variety.

1798/7 S-152, R.2. Sharpness of XF 40, net VF 30. Here is an exceptional, high-grade example of this all-too-difficult variety. On the obverse, there is a minor rough patch in the right field, and smaller patches on the lower obverse. The reverse has some tiny green spots and small patches of porosity scattered through the legend and devices. In addition, there are trivial rim marks, notably beneath the fraction, above the E of UNITED, and surrounding the first A of AMERICA. Identifiable by a tick mark on the right top of the first T of STATES and a horizontal scrape at the center of Liberty's chest.
This coin probably didn't circulate very long, as little wear is visible on the highpoints of the devices. The color is medium-brown, with the darker patches as noted, and the surfaces are a bit glossy. Probably within the low end of the twelve-coin Condition Census, and extremely difficult to find with surfaces even approaching this specimen's quality. A formidable coin that will be a centerpiece of an advanced collection.

Nearly 30 examples of this variety are known today, up considerably from the 10 coins reported by Dr. Sheldon in Penny Whimsy. However, as a true Rarity-6, it is still a significant rarity. This is an intermediate die state with a prominent crack through the tops of OF. The reverse buckling is not immediately evident on this example. Dark steel-brown surfaces have accents of lighter tan on the devices. The surfaces are moderately and evenly corroded. This is a typical appearance for these coins, as Breen suggested when he commented: "Usually found in low grades, on porous Coltman planchets." NCS Corroded.

This is a rather plentiful variety with numerous higher grade examples known; however, the opportunity to acquire an example is infrequent. For example, the top 12 examples in the Census have appeared in auction fewer than 10 times in the last 50 years. While this cent is not among those 12, it might be worth buying this example, rather than waiting several years for a top quality coin. The cent offered here is attractive with grayish-brown color and tan accents. The surfaces have myriad abrasions, many appearing to be from the original planchet. A couple light scratches and other blemishes are present.

1798 AU 50 Digs in Field. S-179, R.3. One of the finer examples known of this slightly scarcer variety. Just outside the Condition Census, the coin will be netted several points lower than its technical grade because of a series of very tiny digs in the upper right obverse field and a spot on the front of the drapery. Otherwise, a smooth, problem-free coin that exudes a warm reddish-brown appearance and is well struck. (PCGS# 1431)

Denis Loring, for example, wrote: "A common variety but a striking specimen - the rainspot obverse is really impressive." Doug Smith poked a little good-humored fun at Loring: "To DWL from WHS [Paschal] at $250 at the end of 1976, when the former started a short-lived variety set of '98's. To CDS at $300 on 7/30/80." Gary Ruttenberg quoted the Jack Robinson catalog: "'Rainspot,' glossy golden biscuit obverse with a glossy, darker brown reverse." "Golden biscuit" is a term that was devised by Doug Smith to describe a highly desirable appearance on the early cents, and suggests the color of a biscuit nicely browned out of the oven. This example is nearly the terminal die state with a heavy rim break over ATES.

1798 1C First Hair Style VF30 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-154, Die State II, R.4. The intermediate die state seen here gives this coin much of its visual and numismatic interest. Pronounced die swelling is seen over AME and the complete word LIBERTY can be read at the bottom of the reverse from die clashing. The overall planchet quality is good and the surfaces are glossy medium brown. A few small abrasions are scattered over the surfaces but the only ones of note are located just below the ribbon and vertically across the bust of Liberty. These two larger blemishes are so nicely blended for color that they are difficult to see without close inspection. This is one of the dozen finest examples of the variety.

1798 1C First Hair Style. S-145, B-2, R.3. XF40 NGC. VF20 EAC. Die State V. The hallmarks of this variety are the closely spaced date and a die chip over the numerator, with the fraction bar connected to the right ribbon. On this coin the obverse shows die sinking before the face and neck of Liberty. The reverse shows a faint crack in the dentils above OF, with some die bulging at OF A, and light crumbling below the O in ONE. This example is notably struck on a smooth, glossy medium-brown planchet with a few lighter areas that include hints of faded red, unlike many dark examples probably struck on the marginal Coltman planchets. Perusal under a glass reveals many contact marks and scrapes, none of them singularly mentionable and mostly hidden in the devices. The overall effect is a pleasing one, of a well-preserved coin that faced some challenges during striking. Bill Noyes grades this specimen VF20 and the seventh finest known to him. Envelope Included.
