1798/7 1C AU58 NGC. XF45 EAC. S-151, Die State VIII, High R.3. It is a joy to revisit coins that have been seen before. In this case, the present cataloger prepared the description of this coin when it was offered as part of the Eliasberg Collection in 1996. In the Eliasberg catalog, it was noted that this cent has a diagonally reeded edge, one of several edge types discussed by Walter Breen in his Large Cent Encyclopedia. He had hoped that all early large cents from the 1797 to 1798 period would be examined for edge type, a proposition much more difficult in these days of third party certification. Typical of most examples from the die pair, this cent is rather poorly struck, with much of Liberty's head details weakly defined, and the right branch of the wreath similarly weak. Part of this weakness is, without a doubt, the result of the die state. This is one of the latest die states we have seen, with all die cracks fully developed. The surfaces have light tan color blended with olive-brown, the obverse somewhat darker in appearance. This is one of the finest 1798/7 overdates of any variety, and a great prize.

1798/7 1C XF40 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. S-152, Die State II, R.2. This is a different overdate die than that found on S-150 and S-151, with a more widely spaced date. The entire upper left serif of the 7 is visible outside the upper left curve of the 8. The surfaces have intermingled chestnut and dark brown color with traces of olive and reddish-brown toning. A few minor marks and blemishes are noted, including a shallow depression within Liberty's hair. A couple tiny rim bruises or nicks are visible. This is the most common of three overdate varieties and is an ideal choice for the Guide Book collector.

1798/7 1C S-152, B-13, High R.2. VF25 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. Die State I. The "wide overdate" variety. Breen's large cent Encyclopedia calls this die state "extremely rare," a perfect obverse with no cracks but buckling beginning from the rim toward the hair below Liberty's ribbon. This lovely coin is struck on a smooth, glossy medium-brown planchet. Without a glass there is a nick visible at the throat, while magnification reveals numerous small abrasions, more so on the reverse, that are invisible to the naked eye. The legend is weak at STA, but overall the coin is attractively detailed for the grade. The overdate is bold, with wide dentilation near the bottom obverse, and the drapery is pleasantly sculpted. A desirable representative of this always popular overdate variety. Envelope Included. (PCGS# 1440)

1798/7 1C Good 6 NGC and EAC. S-150, Die State IV, R.5. This is a late die state with considerable die buckling on the reverse. The S-150 variety is one of three different overdate varieties from two different obverse dies. The most distinctive characteristic of this obverse is the close date. The left point of the 7 shows above the upper left curve of the 8. The surfaces have dark chocolate color with lighter grayish-olive on the devices. This is a pleasing cent without any noticeable imperfections.
