1804 1C VF35 PCGS. S-266, R.2. Die State IV, large die breaks over RTY and MERIC. The sole die marriage of the date, and thus a key to a date collection of Large Cents, along with the 1799 and 1793. This richly detailed walnut-brown representative is nearly void of marks, and the surfaces offer only a hint of granularity. The dies are rotated such that the O in the date is aligned with the O in OF, long used as a diagnostic along with the prominent rim cuds, if the latter are present. The majority of 1804 Cents are in well worn or corroded condition, and cannot compete with this comparatively bold and smooth example. Population: 10 in 35, 12 finer (11/05). (PCGS# 1504)

1804 1C VF25 NGC. S-266, R.2. An early die state struck from perfect dies, without the looming rim breaks found on many examples of 1804 Cents. Faint mint-made clash marks, however, are present on both sides. A pleasing golden-brown example, a pinscratch on the bust truncation is inconspicuously placed, as is a solitary gray spot on the obverse at 4:30. A key date among Draped Bust Cents since only one die marriage was utilized. (PCGS# 1504)

1804 1C XF45 NGC. S-266, R.2. Die State IV. The die crack is pronounced over the RTY of LIBERTY, and another break is visible over MERIC on the reverse. While not a particularly scarce date, only one variety is available of the 1804. Thus, the collectibility of the 1804 is broken down by distinctive die states. This piece has darker brown surfaces with just slightly lighter highpoints over the devices. A couple of light scratches on the profile of Liberty are the only notable blemishes, the other marks present are consistent with the grade. EAC 25. (PCGS# 1504)

1804 1C AU 55 Scratches. S-266, the only known dies, R.2. Die State C. The scratches are inconspicuous and concentrated about the obverse rim break. It appears as though a misinformed collector tried to efface this important diagnostic feature. The balance of the surfaces are smooth and display intermingled swirls of orange-tan and chocolate-brown patina. Crisp definition rounds out the pleasing overall appearance of this key date large cent. (PCGS# 1504)

1804 XF 45 NGC. S-266, Die State C, R.2. Along with the 1799, the 1804 has, since the dawn of American numismatics, been considered a key date among early coppers. This coin is from the advanced state of the dies, showing a die crack at the rim over RTY in LIBERTY on the obverse, and another over MERIC in AMERICA on the reverse. Only one die was utilized for the year, and as a result the 1804 cent is a very popular and much-in-demand coin. The surfaces are medium brown with darker gray color clinging to the devices. 1804 1C VF20 PCGS. S-266, R.2. An early die stage without the often seen rim breaks above portions of LIBERTY and AMERICA. A deeply toned piece that exhibits blue-green and lavender tints when confronted with light at an angle. Attractively detailed, tiny marks are distributed, a hint of verdigris is present above the left ribbon end, and a rising pinscratch is noted on the denominator. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 5 in 20, 27 finer (10/05).

1804 1C VF25 NGC. S-266c. B-1, R.2. Die State III. The obverse rim is broken through RTY, with the break extending downward to touch the tops of those letters. The reverse shows a light die crack through the tops of MERI, but not yet through C, with a break forming at the rim above. This example is pleasingly detailed on a problem-free, smooth, dark-brown planchet. Despite the fact that this coin has been subject to extensive counterfeiting, large cent specialists and many other numismatists know of a simple test that will uncover most of the impostors: the 0 in the date is directly opposite the O in OF. This date, along with the 1793 and 1799, have long been considered the "keys" to the large cent series, and this pleasing example is sure to occupy a place of honor soon in a new collection.
