1849 1C MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. N-22, R.1. GDS B. More Red than Brown on the obverse, as most of the obverse field retains its original salmon-pink color. The reverse is a bit more mellowed, although orange color is also extensive. Nicely struck and void of contact, a couple of small and smooth dark spots are of no importance. A pleasing Gem from the historic year of 1849, which witnessed a mass migration west to California gold fields.

1849 1C MS66 Red and Brown NGC. N-22. E-MDS. The card from Bob Grellman that accompanies this coin also grades it 66, and he notes that the obverse is 85% lustrous while the reverse is 65% lustrous. There is quite a bit of mint red remaining, particularly on the obverse, and mottled medium brown patina is also seen on both sides. Bold-to-sharp striking definition over all features enhances the already impressive eye appeal. A few small, well scattered spots on the obverse are noted for accuracy. Population: 2 in 66 Red and Brown, there are none finer with this color designation (11/02). (PCGS# 1887)

A well struck near-Gem that has radiant golden-brown color on the obverse and dusky olive-brown patina on the reverse. A tiny contact mark approaches Liberty's nose, but the surfaces are elsewhere nearly pristine. (PCGS# 1887)

1849 1C MS64 Red and Brown NGC. N-22, R.1. This coin presents two markedly different "looks" depending on whether one is examining the obverse or the reverse. The obverse exhibits a mostly lustrous sheen with rich reddish-orange color and some traces of toning intermingled throughout. The reverse, on the other hand, is toned in more or less even medium brown shades. The bold overall strike leaves little to complain about, and the surfaces are free of individually mentionable blemishes. According to Robinson, some spectacular (MS65-67) examples of this die marriage are extant, although his Condition Census also includes several MS64 and MS63 representatives.
