1853 1C MS67 Red PCGS. Amazing, simply amazing. Full, complete red luster covers both sides of this immaculate coin. One glance confirms that the color is unquestionably original. While the color is what is most fragile on copper coins and most highly prized, this coin also shows striking details that are as nearly complete as any we have ever seen on a Large Cent. Usually the centers are sharply defined and the peripheries weak, but not on this coin. Every star radial is present around the margin of the obverse and full venation is seen on the leaves of the wreath on the reverse. However, even at the MS67 level, this coin is not perfect. But the few defects that are present do not affect the appearance or desirability of this beautiful coin. This is the only MS67 Red 1853 Cent certified by either of the major services (5/01) with none finer. This is sure to be a hotly contested coin by type collectors. (PCGS# 1903)

1853 1C MS66 Red PCGS. N-25, R.1. The brief horizontal bar from a denticle near star 1 confirms the Newcomb marriage. A lustrous fire-red Premium Gem with essentially unabraded surfaces. A few tiny dashes of aqua visit the upper half of the obverse. Well struck save for a hint of softness on STATES and the lower star centers. This gorgeous Premium Gem will delight the specialist, as well as the type set collector. Encapsulated in an old green label PCGS holder. EAC 63. Population: 13 in 66, 1 finer (7/06). (PCGS# 1903)

1853 1C MS65 Red PCGS. N-25, R.1. This coin almost single-handedly gives new meaning to the "Red" designation, for it is nearly as bright and fresh looking as any of the new Lincoln cents one might pick up in pocket change today. The base of the 1 in the date is recut, and a mint-made spur from a denticle near the first star confirms this more available variety. Liberty's portrait is crisply struck, as is the reverse wreath, though most of the stars lack central details. The rims show nearly complete dentilation, though those at the upper left obverse border are a trifle weak. A simply astounding Braided Hair large cent. Housed in a first generation PCGS holder. Population: 54 in 65, 14 finer (7/04). (PCGS# 1903)

1853 1C MS66 Red PCGS. An absolutely perfect type coin. Both sides exhibit bright, original mint red color. The only variation in the surfaces is a small darker patch of color over CE in CENT on the reverse. A hoard of these were available some twenty years ago, but they were quickly dispersed and we don't see many any more, even in auction. Sharply struck throughout with good (but not complete) definition even on the peripheral stars. Population: 13 in 66, 1 finer (1/03). (PCGS# 1903)

1853 MS 66 Red NGC. N-25, R.1. This coin almost single-handedly gives new meaning to the "Red" designation, for it's as bright and fresh looking as any of the new Lincoln cents one might pick up in pocket change today. That is not to say that the piece is flawless, however, for 145 years of existence have taken some tiny toll. Under low magnification some minuscule carbon spots can be found, but they can also be excused when the "big picture" is looked at. The brightness and luster of the coin are as nice as can be expected for basically any date Braided Hair large cent, and its beauty speaks for itself. Population: 9 at 66, with none finer (4/98). 1853 1C MS65 Red PCGS. N-25, R.1. Superb mint red color gives this piece an allure that is missing on most early copper coins. Rich copper color surrounds the devices with slightly lighter but equally bright mint red on the remaining areas of the coin. Sharply struck with good balance of strike between the centers and peripheries. A few light carbon specks are scattered over each side but none are large enough to merit individual mention. 1853 MS 66 Red NGC. While not a rare coin with full, original red color, such coins never fail to impress us when they come our way. This piece has fiery-red and completely original surfaces. The obverse is lightly flecked with carbon from handling but the reverse is pristine. From a consignment of high grade type, actually a complete U.S. type set except for the '96-97 half, this piece is sure to find its way into another equally impressive set.
