1865 1C PR 66 Red PCGS. We do not have a record for the sale of a PR 66 Red 1865 Indian cent from any year in the 1990s. In fact, this issue is seldom offered in any grade with undiminished luster quality. One of the diagnostics of this proof delivery is a small spine that protrudes into Liberty's neck from the ribbon, a feature that one can discern on the present example with the naked eye. Crimson-orange color shimmers across the obverse, the reverse displays mottled orange-red and olive colors. With impeccably preserved features, it is no wonder that this coin is one of only two PR 66 Red examples known to NGC and PCGS. There are no coins certified finer (10/00).

1865 1C PR66 Red PCGS. Only two coins have been so highly graded by the two major services and none are finer. This issue is seldom offered in any grade with undiminished luster quality. 1865 1C PR66 Red NGC. Very scarce as a Gem and with full red color. This coin is not technically a full red piece on the obverse, but it is completely original and untampered. Many of the planchets for proofs from this year have tin and zinc that was not mixed well in the alloy. Because of the volatility of these metals, the planchets will not hold the original red color of the coin for very long. On this piece, the obverse has a lovely mixture of lime-green and red coloration, while the reverse is almost completely cherry-red. An interesting piece and one that the advanced collector will surely appreciate. Population: 1 in 66, 0 finer (9/04). (PCGS# 2284)

1865 1C PR65 Red PCGS. This issue has a high percentage of proofs that have not held their original color over the decades because of improper mixture of the copper and tin or zinc alloy. This piece has bright, even red color over each side, and as such is one of the more desirable dates in the bronze series. Nicely reflective, the striking details are sharply impressed over each side with very few post-striking impairments present. Population: 9 in 65, 1 finer (4/03). (PCGS# 2284)

1865 1C PR65 Red PCGS. All proofs of the 1865 Indian Cent display a Plain 5 in the date, and many examples were struck from a die that Mint personnel prepared with a defective digit punch. Those coins, the present example included, display a small spur from the upper right curve of the 8 in the date. The 1865 (approximately 500 pieces struck) is a scarce coin with full Red luster, particularly at the Gem level of preservation. This is a lovely specimen with glowing orange-red coloration and fully brought up devices. Glassy reflectivity is readily evident as the surfaces rotate under the light, but one would be hard pressed to find more than one or two inconsequential blemishes. This is only the second PCGS-certified Gem Red proof 1865 Indian Cent that we have handled in at least ten years. Population: 9 in 65 Red, with just one finer (10/02).

1865 1C PR65 Red NGC. This undeniably original Gem is fully lustrous with orange-red color and deeply set olive tinged undertones. The latter are only really evident at indirect angles, but even the most casual observation will reveal razor sharp striking detail throughout. Moderately, yet appreciably reflective in the fields, the Gem quality surfaces are devoid of noteworthy blemishes. Conditionally rare, the combined NGC and PCGS population of the 1865 Cent in PR65 Red is only 14 coins. Just two pieces are finer (10/02). (PCGS# 2284)
