1881 3CN PR68 NGC. Fully struck with nicely reflective fields and virtually pristine surfaces. Light repunching is evident within the loops of both 8s and the final 1 in the date. Even close examination fails to reveal any notable surface distractions. This is one of the finest examples we have had the opportunity to offer at public auction. Population: 7 in 68, none are finer (4/05).

1881 3CN PR67 PCGS. The 8s in the date are each recut within their loops. An outstanding proof three cent nickel that would be the perfect type coin. The surfaces are brilliant and the fields deeply mirrored, with not even the smallest handling mark apparent on either side. A tiny planchet flaw (as struck) rests beside the N in UNITED, on the lower obverse, and there is some scattered milky patina over the reverse, but these elements are easy to overlook. (PCGS# 3777)
