1926-D 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. Ex: The Chicagoland Collection. A very scarce Standing Liberty quarter with full definition on the head of Liberty. In fact, the otherwise plentiful 1926-D is considered by many to be among the scarcest regular issues with full head detailing. This is a nicely detailed coin in all areas, with a hard, satiny texture to its untoned centers. The reverse exhibits a matte appearance. Just the slightest golden toning is seen at the edges. Of the greatest rarity and importance to Full Head collectors.

1926-D 25C MS65 Full Head PCGS. A bright, satiny coin that retains strong luster in the fields and a well struck head on Liberty. The shield has slight weakness as usual, even for coins which earn the Full Head designation. This is one of the most difficult dates to obtain in Gem grades with the Full Head, as most show significantly weaker strikes and more surface nicks. Not so here, as the surfaces are very fresh and well preserved. We note a couple of microscopic ticks, one on the end of the branch, another nick close to the center of the right wing of the eagle below the last A of AMERICA. An exciting coin to view and one that will make a welcome acquisition for an advanced collector. Population: 18 in 65, 10 finer (9/05). (PCGS# 5757)

1926-D 25C MS65 Full Head PCGS. Despite a published mintage figure of 1.7 million pieces, which is low by 20th century standards, the 1926-D is among the more common dates in the Standing Liberty Quarter series. Bidders should be aware, however, that we are using the term "common" in an absolute sense, because the '26-D is a significant strike rarity that is difficult to locate at all levels of Full Head quality. (Per Cline, only 1% of the original mintage is believed to have been delivered with Full Head definition).

This is a simply remarkably coin in that the focal features exhibit razor sharp striking definition. Liberty's head is full, with all three olive sprigs complete and the ear hole discernible. Both sides are tinged in golden-gray iridescence with thick, rich, billowy mint frost throughout. There is not a single noteworthy bagmark, but accuracy compels us to mention a curious texture in the reverse field that is mostly likely the result of granularity in the die. The upper right reverse and lower right obverse borders are also a little softly detailed. We last offered an MS65 Full Head PCGS representative of this important D-mint issue as lot 6784 in our January 2000 FUN Signature Sale. Bidding for that coin reached the $18,000 level.

1926-D 25C MS 66 Full Head PCGS. Despite a limited mintage of slightly more than 1.7 million pieces, this D-mint delivery is remarkably obtainable through the MS 65 grade tier. If one were to demand a representative that combines pristine surface preservation and bold striking quality, however, their search would be anything but easy. In the February 1986 edition of The Coin Dealer Newsletter, J. H. Cline stated of the 1926-D: "The classic for most flat heads. True MS 65/65 Full Heads are very rare, probably 20/25 pieces exist of this date and mintmark." Current population data reports 25 specimens in Gem Mint State levels of preservation with none finer (9/99). As NGC and PCGS together report only 8 of these coins at the MS 66 grade tier, the present specimen must be numbered among the finest certified survivors of the issue. Heavily frosted, both sides exhibit pleasing cartwheel sheen. Mottled milky-gold accents are visible at select angles of observation, but the overall appearance is one of brilliance. The otherwise crisp strike wanes somewhat over the inner shield, gown lines, and eagle's breast, although Liberty's head features are complete and deserving of the vaunted Full Head designation. For pedigree purposes, we call attention to a well concealed toning spot along the lower left obverse periphery as well as a small grease spot (as struck) about the reverse rim between QUARTER and DOLLAR. As befits the Superb Gem assessment, neither the obverse nor the reverse displays even the most trivial surface detraction. According to the consignor, this is the only example of the MS 66s extant with complete definition on the bottom two stars on the obverse near the date. With memorable eye appeal and unsurpassable technical quality, this D-mint specimen would fit comfortably into the finest assembly of Standing Liberty quarters.
