1811 MS 67 NGC. O-105a, R.2. In the early part of the 19th century, Bust halves were held as cash reserves in banks along the east coast, just as Morgan dollars were held fifty years later. However, unlike the Morgan dollar, most of these coins did eventually find their way into circulation and today mint state Bust halves are a scarce and worthwhile U.S. type coin. Superb examples are very rare. This is an exceptional piece that is virtually blemish-free. The surfaces are highly lustrous with warm, glowing mint frost beneath the light gray patina that covers both sides. The peripheries deepen to an iridescent golden, blue, and rose coloration. Very sharply struck with almost complete details on each design element. Simply amazing quality and easily the finest known example of the variety. Population: 1 in 67, none are finer (1/95). 1811 50C Large 8 MS66 PCGS. O-104, R.1. A satiny dove-gray premium Gem, thorough inspection fails to reveal even the faintest contact on the reverse. The obverse is also remarkably clean for a large silver coin from the early 19th century, since only a pair of tiny ticks on the neck deny surface perfection. The major devices are intricately struck, and most of the stars possess sharp centrils. The satin luster is unperturbed. Outstanding quality for this important and devoutly collected type. Population: 2 in 66, none finer (3/05). (PCGS# 6096)

PCGS 1811 MS 64. O-110a. Small 8. Both sides display needle sharp definition and are draped in a lovely golden-violet toning with flashes of green and yellow-gold about the edges. The reverse appears to be rotated about 10 degrees. This coin is as close to a gem as one will find a Bust half dollar in a "64" holder. One of just 13 pieces so graded by PCGS, with 3 more graded higher (12/92). (PCGS# 6096)

1811 50C Large 8 MS64 PCGS. O-103, R.4. A scarce variety, the present example is also one of the finest known representatives of the 1811 O-103 Half based on Overton's Condition Census listing: 64; 63; 63; 63; 60. The die lines (as struck) around the end of Liberty's bust easily identify this obverse. Richly endowed with swirling mint frost, the champagne tinged surfaces are virtually devoid of post-production distractions. There are, however, numerous bold clashmarks (also as produced) in the fields on both sides. An expertly centered and sharply brought up near-Gem for the advanced Capped Bust Half Dollar specialist.
