1827/6 50C MS65 PCGS. O-102, R.1. The right loop of the underdigit is clearly visible to the right of the 7 in the date. All of the obverse stars are drawn toward the edges of the coin, a diagnostic feature of this variety and an indication that the obverse die, the same used on Overton-101, is in a later state, and beginning to exhibit symptoms of wear. Otherwise, this conditionally rare Gem shows unusually sharp striking characteristics, especially on the eagle's feathers. Rich original toning appears on both sides, in warm, variegated earth tones that include olive, dark-green, and golden-brown. Full glowing luster shines forth from the impressively preserved surfaces, and a few wispy marks on the obverse, on Liberty's portrait and in the left obverse field, are all that keep the piece from being pristine. A delightful, beautifully toned and undamaged Gem, and one of the finest examples of the Overton-102 variety that we have been privileged to offer in recent years. 1827/6 50C MS66 NGC. O-102, R.1. The underdigit 6 is bold, with curves above and to the right of the prominent 7. A gorgeously toned and lustrous Gem. Golden-brown, olive, and slate-gray colors provide substantial eye appeal, and the surfaces are impressively undisturbed. The major devices and the reverse border are well struck, while stars 7 through 13 are slightly soft in the centers. The 1827/6 obverse was paired with three different reverse dies. Overton-102 is distinguished by a slender die break after the final A in AMERICA, whimsically referred to as an "apostrophe" by die researcher Glenn Peterson. A splendid example of this popular Guide Book variety. Census: 2 in 66, 0 finer (11/06). (PCGS# 6147)

1827/6 50C MS64 PCGS. O-103, R.4. There are three different die varieties known for the 1827 overdate half dollars, all from a single obverse die. The O-103 die combination is the scarcest of these varieties, although a small number of pleasing Mint State examples survive. This near-Gem specimen is fully lustrous with frosty silver surfaces. Splashes of gold color are evident on each side with few imperfections of any type. Population: 6 in 64, 2 finer (1/07).

1827/6 50C MS65 NGC. O-102, R.1. An impressively pedigreed Gem overdate that traces back to the Scanlon and Robison Sales. Both sides exhibit an intense, frosty brilliance with tinges of pale golden-orange patina throughout. The strike is well executed in all areas. Faint clashing of the shield stripes is visible beneath Liberty's ear lobe, a diagnostic of this die pairing, and the underdigit is clearly discernible to the right of the 7. Easily Condition Census, most likely at the high end of the ranking.
