1829/7 50C MS 65 NGC. O-102, R.2. The strike on both sides of this coin is as close to full as one could expect for a Capped Bust half dollar, and this coin was probably one of the first examples produced with this die pair. The surfaces are also smooth with serious claim to an even higher grade. Finally, toning enthusiasts will appreciate the rich endowment of lavender-charcoal and orange-gold patina that envelops both sides. (PCGS# 6155)

1829/7 50C MS65 NGC. O-102, R.2. Although graded the same as the coin in our Central States Sale, this piece has lighter, more even toning overall. Two Gems are listed at the top of the Condition Census in Overton, the complete C.C. being (65, 65, 63, 63, 63). The surfaces show sparkling mint luster and are draped in lovely pastel iridescence on each side. Sharply struck throughout. The most prominent pedigree identifier is a spot on the reverse just below the M in UNUM. (PCGS# 6155)

1829/7 50C MS64 PCGS. Ex: Queller. O-101, R.1. This is a mid Condition Census coin, the only two pieces we know of that are finer being the Suros and Farley coins. Sharply struck throughout, the surfaces show bright, satiny mint luster and each side has lovely golden toning with deep blue around the obverse periphery. A problem-free example with no obvious abrasions on either side. Population: 9 in 64, 2 finer (10/03).

1829/7 50C MS65 NGC. O-102, R.2. This coin was previously offered as lot 1158 in our September 2002 Long Beach Bullet Auction, where it was cataloged as: "The scarcer of the two 1829 over 1827 varieties. The overdate is bold and affects all four digits, and well deserves its status as a separate Guide Book variety. A pleasing Gem with modest luster and rich sea-green and lilac patina. The strike is extremely impressive, as the stars, hair curls, plumage, shield and claws all have outstanding definition. The surfaces are beautifully preserved. Struck from slightly rotated dies." Population: 5 in 65, with none finer (10/02). (PCGS# 6155)

1829/7 50C MS65 NGC. O-102, R.2. This overdate obverse die was mated with two separate reverse dies, O-102 being the scarcer of the two die marriages. Any discussion along these lines is, however, academic, as all overdate Bust Halves that grade as fine as the present Gem are sure to elicit strong bids from specialists. In addition, this is a simply beautiful coin whose razor sharp strike has to be seen to be fully appreciated. The surfaces are pristine and frosty beneath rich lavender-charcoal toning. Warmer orange, gold, and olive colored accents are interspersed throughout. NGC and PCGS combined report only seven 1829/7 Half Dollars of both die varieties in MS65, and none finer (9/01).

1829/7 50C MS64 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. O-102, R.3. If you missed the Queller 1829/7 overdate, here is a second chance to purchase what is likely the finest known example of this second variety of this unusual overdate. The Condition Census as listed in the third edition of Overton is (63, 58, 55, 55, 55), which would pretty well cinch this coin's position as finest known. The devices are sharply struck and well centered. The lustrous surfaces are overlaid with lovely gray-brown patina that is just a bit deeper in hue on the reverse.

This piece has a sharp strike with full details except where they are lapped away due to the late die state. 1829/7 50C MS64 NGC. O-101, R.1. Well struck on the major devices, although a few of the uppermost stars and the denomination are not fully brought up. The surfaces are beautifully preserved, and have original milky pearl-gray and russet patina. The luster is semi-prooflike, especially on the reverse. Intense scrutiny of the surfaces reveals only a short and inconspicuous staple scratch above the Liberty cap. Population: 14 in 64, 6 finer (11/03). (PCGS# 6155)

1829/7 50C MS64 NGC. O-102, R.2. The upright of the digit 7 appears beneath the right side of the 9 in the date, yet there is virtually no trace of the top of the 7, which is why this overdate was described as "1829/1" for many years. This example is fully prooflike, with mirrored fields visible beneath deep gold and steel toning. A few prooflike examples of this variety are known, although no proofs have been described in the literature.
