1848 $1 PR66 NGC. Although the mintage is not specifically known, 25 to 35 examples seems to be a good estimate, and it is this estimate that was noted by Dave Bowers in his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. At the time these Proof coins were struck, distribution was to the occasional collector who would walk in the front doors of the Mint in Philadelphia, as well as presentation pieces to contemporary VIPs, either by the individual coin or by complete sets. One finer example of this Proof issue has been certified by NGC, and these two coins represent the finest known examples. PCGS has not grading anything finer than PR63. Our research leads us to the conclusion that less than a dozen examples of this Proof Silver Dollar are known.

We have differentiated nine pieces in our Census, along with 10 additional auction records. In addition to this example, we have recorded the following different specimens: Smithsonian Institution; Starr, lot 591; Pittman, lot 1678; Eliasberg, lot 2215; Carter, lot 256; Silverman, lot 4076; Sweet, lot 1009; and Pellegrini, lot 10263. A gunmetal-blue and violet center is framed with champagne-golden color on the obverse, the reverse exhibits a vertical streak of steel-blue with russet shades at either side. A pristine example of this supreme rarity. Population: 1 in 66, 1 finer (10/05).

1848 $1 PR64 NGC. This coin was previously offered as lot 5321 in our October 1999 E-Fair Premier Sale, where it was cataloged as: "Within a series of noted rarities, the 1848 issue is certainly among the rarest of the proof Seated Dollars. Of the estimated 25-35 specimens originally coined, Bowers (1993) speculates that fewer than 15 specimens are extant today. While NGC and PCGS combined have certified seven examples, the current piece shares the PR64 grade tier with [two] other coins and is bettered by [two more] single PR66 NGC specimen (1/02). While the trio of small die chips below Liberty's right (facing) breast are indicative of the issue, a small planchet flaw on the obverse rim below the date is important for establishing the pedigree of this piece. The champagne-gold patina that overlays the obverse deepens somewhat across the reverse, although we note that the reflectivity of the underlying fields shines through forcefully. Crisply struck from the top of Liberty's head to the bottom of the eagle's left (facing) leg, the few wispy, grade-defining hairlines hardly detract from this coin's noteworthy rarity and memorable eye appeal. The meager output of 15,000 business strike Dollars produced this year focuses added attention on this proof specimen. Dedicated Seated Dollar collectors would be wise to take full advantage of the opportunity that this Condition Census example offers..."

The PR62 specimen offered here exhibits crisp definition on the design elements, and each side is awash in dappled reddish-brown, cobalt-blue, yellow-gold, and golden-brown patina. The reverse is relatively devoid of mentionable abrasions, while the obverse displays a few minute marks on Liberty's neck, cheek, and left breast. 1848 $1 PR60 ANACS. An exceptionally important proof of the 1840s, one of an estimated mintage of merely 15 pieces. Pale green, blue, and violet patina graces the fields, while the devices are predominantly plum. Light hairlines and contact marks are present on both sides, though an extended mark to the right of the date is most noticeable. (PCGS# 6989)

1848 PR 63. Prior to 1858, proofs were not coined with any regularity or with any real plan for distribution, and this dollar was probably struck at the request of one of the few collectors of the time or as a presentation piece for some contemporary VIP. This piece is excellently struck, has good mirrors, and multicolored toning in magenta, gold, orange, russet, aquamarine, and cerise. A solid offering for the aficionado of early proofs. (PCGS# 6989)
