1921 $1 MS67 NGC. Just over a million pieces were struck of the 1921 Peace dollar, a low mintage even by Peace dollar standards. But it is not the low mintage that makes this issue a perennial favorite of collectors. It is the first year of issue, of course, but more importantly it was struck in high relief and the only year to have been so produced. The high relief proved to be both a blessing and a curse for the 1921 Peace dollar. It was a blessing in that it rendered de Francisci's magnificent design in three-dimensional relief. It was a curse as the same three-dimensional quality gave almost all the coins produced a weak strike in the centers. This softness of strike is a result of die opposition; that is, the obverse and reverse design elements were each sufficiently high on both obverse and reverse that it was virtually impossible to strike the coin so enough metal would flow into all the recesses of the dies. This particular coin demonstrates the problem of die opposition, but it actually has stronger definition than most 1921 Peace dollars. Nevertheless, what sets this coin apart from other 1921 dollars is the extraordinarily thick mint luster. Both sides have swirling mint frost that is unimpeded by toning or any significant abrasions. While relatively available in MS64 and MS65 condition, there are very few MS67 coins available (and none finer). NGC has only certified five other pieces, and PCGS has graded five in this grade (6/06). This lot presents the Peace dollar collector with a rare opportunity to acquire this important date in the ultimate grade. (PCGS# 7356)

1921 $1 MS67 NGC. Although saved in significant numbers as a first-year issue, the 1921 is a conditionally challenging coin that is usually found with numerous distracting bagmarks. Strike is also a problem for this issue, as the high relief of the design often resulted in soft definition in the centers. This is a truly amazing specimen. The surfaces are uncommonly clean with a smooth, virtually untouched cheek on Liberty's portrait. The striking quality is above average for the issue with sharpness of detail in most areas and emerging definition over the central highpoints. Finally, the luster is exceptionally radiant with a swirling, frosty texture. A completely brilliant appearance is seen on each side. This coin was obviously well cared for since the day of issue, and we have no doubt that the consignor also handpicked it for extraordinary technical quality and awe-inspiring eye appeal. 1921 $1 MS67 NGC. In addition to being the first year of issue for the new Peace dollar design, the 1921 is also the only year this design was struck in high relief, save for a handful of 1922 matte proof examples. For some reason unknown to us, the High Relief double eagle has always received accolades from collectors, even in the year of issue, but the High Relief Peace dollar is greeted with little more than a yawn by most numismatists. Just over a million pieces were produced in December 1921, and as one would expect, high grade, well struck examples are now very elusive. This piece shows strong striking details for the issue with rich, frosted mint luster liberally coating the surfaces. Each side presents a fully brilliant, snow-white appearance as if this coin had been recently struck. As expected of the assigned Superb grade, there are no mentionable marks or other distractions. A conditionally rare example worthy of a close look and a spirited bid. Census: 6 in 67, none are finer (3/06).

1921 $1 MS67 PCGS. To the best of our knowledge, no major numismatic auction house has handled a Superb Gem 1921 Peace Dollar since at least 1993. This should come as no surprise to students of the series, as both major grading services have certified just eight coins in MS67. There are none finer (3/02).

Due to the difficulty of striking high relief coins efficiently, the Peace dollar's relief was lowered following 1921, making this first-year issue a highly sought-after one-year type. This piece showcases incredibly bold detail on Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers, putting this coin in a class by itself for strike quality. The luster is fully brilliant with a satiny appearance, and the surfaces exhibit excellent preservation. Only six examples have graded numerically finer at PCGS (8/25).
