Cornelius Vermeule, writing in his Numismatic Art In America, praised the Pan-Pac dollar motif: "Charles Keck's gold dollar is a novel, daring use of the limited area afforded by such a small, thin coin. Compared with the earlier gold dollars, the coin is a work of art."

1915-S G$1 Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar MS67 PCGS. This delectable Superb Gem features a gorgeous two-toned appearance on the obverse, with golden-orange highpoints and an area of greenish-gold near the lower rim. The reverse is a consistent orange-gold. A well struck and essentially unmarked piece, lacking the usual contact marks seen on the cheek of lower-grade examples. The luster is frosty and unbroken throughout. This coin would fit well into a Superb gold commemorative type set without ever requiring an upgrade. Population: 44 in 67, 0 finer (6/06). (PCGS# 7449)

1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar MS 67 PCGS. This coin has the clean, problem-free surfaces one would expect from a coin graded MS 67, but it goes far beyond the requirements of technically perfection. What this coin possesses an abundance of is eye appeal. And that is based upon two components, luster and color. The mint luster sparkles with a scintillating frostiness that is seldom seen on commemorative gold coins. The luster provides a shimmering backdrop for the sharply contrasting colors seen over both sides. A streak or splash of bright pinkish-rose butts up against a swirl of lilac--these two colors providing an overlay of original patina that establish this coin as one of the most memorable Pan-Pac dollars anyone has ever seen. 1915-S G$1 Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar MS67 NGC. Ex: Prinzi Collection. This piece is among the finest few dozen of this popular and historic gold commemorative issue. Interestingly, as of this writing (11/06), both NGC and PCGS have each certified 45 pieces (including duplicates), with none finer. Both sides of this Superb Gem are distraction-free and as struck. The worker's cheek and hat area, a magnet for abrasions on lower grade examples, are especially clean on this piece, and the beautiful luster and orange-gold coloration complete the appeal. The reverse shows a couple of dark-amber toning areas.
