1877 1C PR66 Red Cameo PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal, card included. Here is one of the finest of just a handful of Gem proof 1877 Indian cents to survive. The surfaces are bathed in rich copper red, a color which has normally faded to tan or brown after 128 years. Furthermore, the surfaces are simply outstanding, with none of the usual specks or spots that plague these early proofs. Struck with all the force needed to bring up the devices, and with enough polish on the dies to impart the desired Cameo contrast on Liberty and the wreath. Precious few can compare with this stunning coin, and any collector will long be proud to own this coin. As the key date to the series pressure on the proof specimens has always remained strong as many collectors are unable to locate a suitable business strike of this date. At this grade level, not many are around. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show 2 graded this high with none seen finer. (PCGS# 82320)

1877 1C PR66 Cameo PCGS. While the official mintage for 1877 Cents is 510 pieces, it is now believed that 910 proofs were actually produced. The extra 400 pieces includes the mintage for the "nickel" proof sets struck this year, which included the Cent and two nickel coins. This is an absolutely marvelous 1877 Cent. The obverse is deep cherry-red, while the reverse is considerably lighter in hue with a light reddish-orange color on that side. The fields are deeply reflective with noticeable contrast evident against the frosted devices. Virtually defect-free, there is a fish-hook shaped lint mark just below the eye of the Indian, and a few tiny specks of carbon are seen on each side. (PCGS# 82320)

1877 1C PR66 Red Cameo PCGS. This coin is one of only two proof 1877 Indian Cent so graded at PCGS, and there are no Red, Cameo examples certified finer (12/03). The contrast truly is impressive for an Indian Cent from this era, with the fully brought up devices set against a backdrop of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. The originally colored and lustrous surfaces alternate between cherry-red and orange-red hues. There is not a single blemish that would call into question the validity of the PR66 designation. 1877 1C PR65 Red, Cameo PCGS. Prior to the recent certification of this exquisite Gem, PCGS had seen only two cameo proof 1877 Indian Cents. Both of those coins grade PR64. With no coins certified Deep Cameo at this grading service (9/02), we anticipate significant competition for this coin between Registry Set collectors. This is a simply beautiful specimen striking with fully original, pink-red luster that reveals olive tinged undertones at indirect angles. The razor sharp strike is far superior to that often seen on business strikes in this series, and the fields glow with an intense reflectivity that could only have been imparted by proof production methods. 1877 1C PR65 Cameo NGC. The 1877 is more available than the dates from the 1860s, but it is still a difficult issue to locate in the higher proof grades. Curiously, no precise mintage figures exist for 1877 proof Cents. It is believed, however, that probably 910 pieces were struck. It is known that 510 "silver" sets were sold, which included the five silver coins, the two nickel coins, and the Cent. Additionally, there were about 400 "nickel" sets struck, which included just the Cent and two nickel coins. We know that 260 of these sets were mailed out, with the unknown remainder being sold over the counter in Philadelphia.

The surfaces on this piece are bright and show original mint luster with a modest contrast between the fields and devices. A few light specks of carbon are flecked over each side. (PCGS# 82320)

1877 1C PR64 Cameo PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. Struck the year after the nation's centennial celebrations and in the same year Rutherford B. Hayes was inaugurated after a very contentious election with Samuel Tilden, the 1877 Indian Cent is full of historic importance. This is a rich, red example that shows a few scattered contact marks that account for the grade. However, each side shows significant contrast between the fields and the devices.

1877 1C PR65 Red Cameo NGC. A splendid Gem proof, this cent exhibits lovely cameo contrast with lustrous devices and deeply mirrored orange fields. Speckles of darker toning are evident on the obverse and reverse surfaces, keeping this Gem from an even higher numerical grade. The 1877 is considered the key date Indian cent, an issue that is highly desired in all grades including circulated, Mint State, and proof. The combination of full red color and vivid cameo contrast is seldom encountered on this or any other date in the Indian cent series. (PCGS# 82320)
