1888 3CN PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. Light mottled tan-gold toning is all but imperceptible without a glass, but otherwise the surfaces appear silver-white and show no distractions of any kind. The deep cameo contrast is noteworthy, as is the thick mint frost coating the devices. The penultimate year for this odd denomination, with a proof-only mintage of 4,582 pieces. The denomination had long since outlived its utility, despite an 1881 mint attempt at resurrection, by the time this piece was struck. Neither service has certified a piece finer (12/06). 1888 3CN PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. A complement to the 1889 also offered in the present auction, even if not quite so extraordinary well preserved. Many specimens of this issue, like the 1889, were melted after the three cent nickel series was abolished in 1890. The present example exhibits profoundly deep, brilliantly reflective mirrors. The devices drip with heavy frost against this pristine background. Completely untoned, this coin presents no spots, ticks, or other distractions to the naked eye. Even under magnification, only the most trivial minutiae are found, including a tiny luster break on the chin, a single dark fleck near the rim, and a couple of ticks on the eyebrow. On the reverse a tiny indentation near the leftmost I appears to be a planchet flaw. Despite these trivia, this coin is incredibly appealing and virtually unimprovable. This is a bright Gem with nary a distracting blemish to report. To date (9/03), this is the single finest Deep Cameo example thus far certified by either service. (PCGS# 93785)

1888 3CN PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Fully brilliant and highly attractive with amazing contrast. The devices have exceptional luster and the fields are deeply mirrored. Tiny raised die "artifacts" are seen within the lower loop of the middle 8 in the date, although they do not appear to represent recutting of the digit. NGC has assigned the Ultra Cameo designation to four examples of this date, and this one is the finest. Population: 1 in PR67 Cameo, 0 finer (5/05). (PCGS# 93785)
