1892-S $1 MS60 NGC. The 1892-S is the second scarcest issue in the entire Morgan series, next only to the 1893-S. While relatively available in XF and AU condition, Uncirculated examples of the 1892-S are extremely rare and seldom offered at public auction or in dealer's showcases. This is an attractive example that is untoned with a few small blemishes overall and some notable scuffiness in the obverse field, these being the essential grade-limiting factors. The luster is a bit thin, but it does cover all the surfaces from fields to devices. (PCGS# 7218)

1867 Joseph J. Mickley Medal PR63 Uncertified. Copper. Thick Planchet. Few collections of coins ever sold in the United States can compare in importance to the cabinet auctioned in 1867 of Joseph J. Mickley. But it is not just the sale itself that is of interest today--Mickley himself was at least as interesting, and had tastes in life, as varied as the coins he collected.

The story goes that at the age of 17, the young Mickley sought out a cent from his birth year: 1799. As later generations of numismatists would immediately recognize, but was unknown at the time, Mickley was born in the rarest year in the entire large cent series from 1793 to 1857. Considerable effort was expended before he finally located an example, and by then he was well on his way to assembling a date run of cents. In the same year, after the fire in the Mint in early 1816, a subterranean vault was uncovered. Two dozen or so old coin dies were discovered and sold to Mickley as scrap (from which he later produced restrikes with the help of Edward Cogan).

But coins were only one area of interest in Joseph Mickley's life. A piano maker and musical instrument repairman by trade, Mickley also had remarkable facility for learning languages. Fluent in French and German, two years after the sale of his collection he left for Europe, and in the several years he was abroad increased his fluency to also include Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, and modern Greek. Following Mickley's death in early 1878, William E. DuBois related the following story about his friend in the American Journal of Numismatics: "In the entertaining manuscript of his travels, to show how the Russians are given to the study of other languages than their own, he states that at Nishni-Novgorod, a town well on to the border of Siberia, he went into a restaurant, where there were two young ladies, one of them smoking a cigarette. Edward H. Harriman Memorial Medal. Gold. 70 mm. 238 grams. Produced by Tiffany and struck in 20 karat gold. It appears that this medal was designed by James Earl Fraser, and the workmanship is truly extraordinary. We are uncertain when this particular medal was awarded (we spent far too much time already on Google trying to find out). The medals were awarded by The American Museum of Safety. The awards were established in 1913 by Mary W. Harriman in memory of her husband, Edward H. Harriman, a pioneer in American railroading. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are presented annually to railroads in three groups of line-haul carriers and a fourth group of switching and terminal companies for attaining the best employee safety records during the preceding year. The gold medal is the highest award. This medal was awarded to The Pennsylvania Railroad-Central Division. Struck with a matte finish, there is just the slightest rub on the lapels of the jacket and on the lower flap of the workman's vest. An exceptional gold medal.

1904 St. Louis World's Fair Exhibit Award Medal MS60 Uncertified. Hendershott 30-50, bronze, 65 mm. square. The medal was designed by A.A. Weinman. Light brown in color, the surfaces are undisturbed aside from a few distributed carbon flecks. Accompanied by its 90 mm. x 90 mm. red leatherette box of issue. The box cover bears the inscriptions UNIVERSAL EXPOSITION/1904/SAINT LOUIS and has a red felt interior that snugly houses the medal. The box is Good condition with edge wear, a corner tear, and repairable separation of the cover.

1955/55 1C Doubled Die AU58 Damaged Rim PCI (MS60 Rim Damage). This doubled die reveals considerable mint red interspersed with areas of tan color. The design elements are adequately struck. A few minute contact marks are noted on Lincoln's forehead, cheek, and shoulder. The main impairment resulting in a Red Holder PCI slab is a large rim bruise at 6 o'clock on the reverse. 1903-O $1 MS65 NGC. Lightly toned with wisps of tan color, this well struck Gem has a clean obverse and good cartwheel luster. Once considered a formidable rarity, the 1903-O emerged in some quantity in the early sixties, although it remains the scarcest 20th century O-mint Dollar. In a GSA holder, the 1903-O is very rare. As of (3/05), NGC has certified a mere three GSA examples, one each in MS62, MS64, and (the present piece) MS65. An important opportunity for the GSA specialist. (PCGS# 407286)
