Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Approximately half of the original cherry-red color is visible amidst mottled steel-blue overtones, with only a single speck of carbon noticeable above the portrait. (PCGS# 70460)

1866 Five-Cents, Judd-489, Pollock-577, R.6, PR64 PCGS. Thick planchet. The obverse is virtually as adopted except for a tiny motto and a ball dividing the date. The reverse is quite distinctive with a narrow laurel wreath enclosing a "Dutch 5," a digit of bulbous tip and knob with a fat upright. The U in UNITED is recut and there are a couple of die scratches at the end of leaves that were transferred to the coin, indicating a hurried or careless manufacture of this design.
This coin previously appeared in our 1983 ANA Auction. At that time it was uncertified, and in its "raw" state we noted that it was 2 mm. thick, and while it appeared slightly thicker than a regular nickel, "this may be an illusion created by the high rims that encircle both sides, as the weight is exactly what it should be." The thick and thin planchets for this variety were not noted in either Judd or Adams-Woodin, but this oversight has been corrected in the Pollock reference. The surfaces are exceptionally bright for a copper-nickel proof with a sparkling texture overall. The fields have a cracked, dry creek bed appearance between 6 and 12 o'clock on the obverse, a result of a carelessly prepared planchet. A distinctive planchet lamination is seen in the reverse field to the left of the 5. The Garrett coin was a Choice Proof and it realized an impressive $5,750 in March 1980.

Regular issue Rays reverse. We have determined the composition of this piece by its weight, approximately 58 grains, to be either copper or bronze, struck with a plain edge. The color is certainly misleading, looking more like nickel in certain areas, as if plated. Toned in dingy antique-gold hues, shading to sea-green about the margins. (PCGS# 60694)

1866 Five-Cents, Judd-526, Pollock-554, R.7, PR63 PCGS. Two obverse dies were muled to produce this unusual two-headed coin. Each side shows George Washington facing right, the date below, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. The dies appear identical, but upon close examination show microscopic differences. Struck in white metal with a plain edge on an oversized planchet. The surfaces have a pewter-gray patina with a faint overlay of rose. A planchet flake is out of the center of the "obverse" and there are several parallel stress lines in the planchet on the "reverse" which account for the grade. Like the Judd-520 above, at one time Sylvester Crosby also owned three examples of this unusual muling.

Formerly listed in Judd as R.8, but in reality a high R.7 with 4, perhaps even 5 pieces known including one in the ANS (the only J-628 in a major museum collection). Perhaps 20-30% of the original red remains, mostly surrounding the devices. There are a few small carbon spots, the most obvious one being at the top of the 6 in the date. (PCGS# 70845)

1882 Five-Cents, Judd-1692, Pollock-1894, R.7, PR64 PCGS. Transitional five-cent, known as the "Exact Type of 1883." Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. A sparkling aluminum coin that shows no traces of oxidation. There are small planchet flakes and lint marks out of each side which are not individually significant but give one an overall impression of a coin that is somewhat less-than-perfect. The most obvious of these mint-made problems is a long, curved lint mark to the right of the bottom of the V in the denomination on the reverse. There are no aluminum strikings of this design in the pattern holdings in the ANA, ANS, Byron Reed Collection, Museum of Connecticut History, or the Smithsonian.

What a curious pattern. Why would the mint produce a pattern of a design they knew would be obsolete within a year? Struck in nickel with a plain edge. 1883 Five-Cents, Judd-1707, Pollock-1911, R.6-7, PR65 PCGS. The central obverse device is similar to the head of Liberty adopted on the regular issue five-cent pieces of this year, the date is below, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the margin. The reverse shows the experimental nature of this pattern with 75 N./25 C. in the center, surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, FIVE on the upper border, CENTS on the lower border, with thirteen stars arranged seven left and six right at the margin. Struck in a magnetic alloy of 75% nickel and 25% copper with a plain edge. The fields are well mirrored and the surfaces overall are quite pleasing with only the tiniest imperfections noted in the preparation of the planchet. Light, streaky, golden-brown toning is seen over both sides but this pale patination does not obscure the underlying surfaces. (PCGS# 62124)

The head of Liberty as seen on the adopted coins of 1883 is used as the central device on the obverse, the date below, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the perimeter. The central reverse device indicates the coin's experimental alloy, 50 N./50 C., surrounded by a small wreath of cotton and corn with FIVE CENTS at top and bottom separated by seven stars left and six right. Stuck in an experimental alloy of half nickel and half copper with a plain edge. The fields are deeply mirrored and the devices frosted, setting up an attractive cameo contrast. Several tiny planchet flakes are noted on each side, with the only post-striking impairment of note being a small carbon spot to the right of the 3 in the date. (PCGS# 62127)

The central obverse design uses Barber's head of Liberty from the adopted nickel design of this year, the date is below with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. The center of the reverse has the experimental alloy designation 50 N./50 C., surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, FIVE at the top, CENTS at the bottom, seven stars left, and six right. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. The dies show evidence of heavy polishing in the fields with a few wispy hairlines scattered about. Struck from rusted dies with several raised streaks of rust on the figure of Liberty above and behind the eye, which would suggest the piece was actually produced several years after the date on the coin.

The central device on the obverse is of Charles Barber's design for the five-cent piece adopted in 1883, the date is below, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the margin. The reverse bears the experimental notation 33 N./ 67 C., surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, FIVE CENTS at the top and bottom, separated by seven stars left and six right. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. The surfaces are bright throughout with deeply mirrored fields and mild frost on the devices. One spot of oxidation is noted below the I in AMERICA, which enables the coin to be tracked for pedigree purposes. Tied with one other piece as finest certified (that also is a PCGS coin). Apparently only three pieces of this rare issue are known. There are no examples of this rare pattern in the five major institutional collections of patterns surveyed for this auction.

A large shield is used as the central device with two long poles behind, one with a Phrygian cap on top, the other with an eagle, a scroll with LIBERTY engraved on it is draped across the center of the shield, the date is below, and E PLURIBUS UNUM above. The reverse has a large numeral 5 in the center with CENTS below, surrounded by a curved olive sprig, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in an experimental alloy of German silver with between 61% and 66% copper, the remaining alloy of nickel and zinc. Plain edge. Essentially problem-free surfaces, the pewter-gray caste of the coin has taken on a light overlay of ice-blue and rose patina. A lovely example of this popular, late date pattern. (PCGS# 62224)

Behind the shield are two crossed poles bearing a liberty cap and eagle. A scroll passing in front of the shield is inscribed LIBERTY. There are 13 stars at the border arranged 7 left and 6 right. The border is beaded on both sides. The denomination 5 CENTS is centered within a curved olive sprig on the reverse. Struck in copper-nickel alloy (75 percent copper, 25 percent nickel), with a plain edge. A bright, lightly toned example of this very rarely seen pattern. Sharply defined throughout. (PCGS# 62224)
