1857 1/2 C MS64 Red PCGS. B-1, C-1, R.2. A frosty pinkish-gold example with scattered carbon flecks over each side that keep this well defined half cent from Gem status. Struck in the denomination's final year and from a reduced mintage of just 35,180 pieces, the 1857 has long been a favorite of collectors. As a Choice Red survivor, it is also legitimately scarce. 1857 MS 65 Red NGC. By 1857, the half cent was a dying breed. The denomination was discontinued the following year, and both commercial and collector interest were at a minimum. As a result, the 1857 half cent has always been a little harder to find in all grades and has enjoyed a slight date premium. The coin offered here is at the pinnacle of those few that were preserved in mint state condition. Medium orange-red with satiny luster, this piece is the only one graded MS 65 Red by either PCGS or NGC. We are certain that some astute collector of copper will cherish this opportunity to own the very best. (PCGS# 1241)

1857 MS 64 Red. By the mid-19th century, copper coins had become so expensive to produce that the Mint Act of February 1857 abolished the half cent and replaced the large cent with the smaller copper-nickel cent. In addition, the half cent had become so unpopular with the American public that Mint Director James Ross Snowden ordered the melting of many of the 35,180 pieces struck at the beginning of 1857. This example, then, is an attractive survivor of the scarcest business strike Coronet half cent. The pristine surfaces display gorgeous orange-red mint luster. Somewhat mushy in isolated areas of the peripheries, the balance of this coin is crisply defined. This lovely near-gem is a couple of scattered carbon spots away from an MS 65 designation. A difficult issue to locate with full mint red luster. (PCGS# 1241)

1857 1/2 C MS 64 Red PCGS. This last-year half cent issue is difficult to locate with full red luster. Both sides of the present near-Gem example show flashy orange-pink color and modest cartwheel effects. There are few contact marks that would bar this coin from an MS 65 grade. To date, NGC and PCGS combined report only 17 coins in MS 64 Red with a lone MS 65 Red NGC example finer (9/99).

1857 1/2 C MS64 Red NGC. C-1. The U.S. Half Cent passed into history by act of Congress in February 1857. By that time, copper prices had risen to the point that it was no longer profitable for the Mint to produce either Half Cents or large Cents. What's more, the former denomination had become so unpopular with the public that examples were seldom encountered in day-to-day commerce. Before passage of this act, the Philadelphia Mint delivered 35,180 Half Cents with the date 1857. Those coins that were not distributed before February were melted on orders from Mint Director Colonel James Ross Snowden.

The final-year 1857 has always been popular among early copper specialists. The date also has a reputation as being scarce to rare in all grades, with fully lustrous Mint State survivors definitely falling into the latter category. Warmly frosted in texture, the surfaces are richly endowed in cherry-red luster. The strike is razor sharp over the central features, and even the peripheral devices are uncommonly well impressed for the type. A little bit of carbon in the center of the reverse is all that seems to bar this important near-Gem from an even higher grade. Population: 4 in 64 Red, there is only one finer (7/02). (PCGS# 1241)

Final year of issue for the denomination, this is an excellent type coin that displays even red luster over each side with just a touch of deeper color in the center of the obverse. Sharply defined throughout with strong definition in the centers as well as around the peripheries. Kept from a full Gem grade by the presence of a carbon spot next to the denticles at 10 o'clock on the obverse.
