1807 1C "Comet" Variety MS64 Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. S-271, Die State IV, R.1. This is one of the most intriguing varieties, in a die state late enough so that the comet is fully visible, and is one of few die states given a separate listing in the Red Book. Earlier die states, with the comet eclipsed, are much scarcer, but not nearly as much fun. This is a splendid Comet with fully lustrous golden-brown color, accented by lighter tan faded from red luster, and also by pale sea-green toning. Most details remain crisp, and both the obverse and the reverse impressions are well-centered. Later die states often have some axial misalignment with the obverse centered and the reverse slightly off-center. This cent is third finest known behind only the Helfenstein and Newcomb coins, and carries an impressive pedigree. The obverse of this example was plated in both editions of Sheldon's work.

A mahogany-brown Cent that has exquisite definition within Liberty's hair tresses. 1807 1C "Comet" Variety XF45 PCGS. S-271, R.1. This is a choice coin for the grade, and a desirable circulated representative of this ever-popular variety. The diagnostic die breaks (as struck) are readily evident in the obverse field, but neither side reveals any sizeable or noteworthy abrasions. The texture is not particularly glossy, but there are no areas of readily evident roughness in the planchet. Mottled medium brown and orange-brown toning is evident on both sides.

1807 1C "Comet" Variety. S-271, B-1, R.1--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. VF20 EAC. Die State IV. Apparently from an early stage within this die state, but the "comet" feature is bold, and faint parallel straight lines extend into the fields from the right obverse rim at the mouth and neck, and behind the lower curls. There are heavy clash marks before and behind the head. This lovely example is well struck, well centered, and boldly detailed on a pleasing olive-brown planchet. The only mentionable mark, and not overly distracting, is a light, straight scratch that extends from the rear of the hair ribbon to the left rim. An attractive and highly collectible example of this popular variety.
