1812 1C Small Date AU55 PCGS. S-291, B-1, R.2. Die State IV, the latest die state described in Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia. This variety is immediately identified by the small die gouge below the upright of E in ONE, but it is also often recognized by the die cracks in the field over Liberty's head and through the stars. The surfaces have smooth olive-brown color with the usual tiny circulation marks, but a complete absence of porosity or other imperfections. Clearly above average for the Classic Head design. EAC 40. 1812 S-291, R.2. Sharpness of Mint State 60 Brown, net AU 50. A golden-tan lustrous coin that is well struck. A glass will locate a minute rim tick above Liberty, and a faint pinscratch or two, but these are very trivial. This coin is tied for third finest known with six others, placing it well up in the Condition Census for the variety. A glorious example that is worthy of the finest collection.

1812 1C Small Date MS61 Brown ANACS. S-289, R.1. Although considered a plentiful variety, higher grade examples are difficult to locate, despite the one-time dispersal of a small hoard. This pleasing example is fully lustrous with deep steel-brown color and hints of blue-green toning. The surfaces are frosty with a full cartwheel appearance. A thin copper colored scratch is visible on Liberty's neck. EAC 40. (PCGS# 1561)

1812 1C Small Date MS62 Brown NGC. S-291, High R.2. This variety is most easily distinguished by the dash (die scratch) below the E in ONE on the reverse. This is quite a remarkable coin for a Classic cent. The devices show remarkably sharp detailing, but what is most unusual is the (relatively) light brown color of the coin. The surfaces are glossy and there are very few imperfections--those being limited to a few faint specks of carbon and a couple of minor abrasions. (PCGS# 1561)

1812 1C Small Date AU58 Uncertified. S-290, R.1. Die State Two. The small engraver's scratch on Liberty's neck below the ear is the most readily identifiable diagnostic of this Small Date die marriage. Both sides are toned in competing medium brown and tan colors, with the latter shade dominating on the reverse. A late die state, the obverse die has started to fail at stars 5-7, but most other features are boldly defined despite a little light rub. The few abrasions that are present are not individually distracting and well within the context of the near-Mint grade level. An old, dull pinscratch from the obverse stars across Liberty's cheek is, however, noted for accuracy. This coin is accompanied by PCGS insert #21016693 that also grades the coin AU58.

1812 1C Small Date AU58 PCGS. S-290, R.1. The rich chocolate-brown patina is very attractive. Well struck in the centers and on the left border, while the right side stars and legends are somewhat softly struck. The cheek has a faint pinscratch, with a few other unimportant abrasions widely distributed. The reverse has a small amount of verdigris. Although a common variety, it is conditionally scarce. Population: 7 in 58, 9 finer (3/02). (PCGS# 1561)

1812 1C Small Date AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-290, Die State III, R.1. Pleasing olive and chocolate-brown surfaces with pale blue and iridescent toning on both sides. This is a lovely example that has only a few minor surface marks of no particular concern. Generally sharp strike with only slight weakness along the upper reverse border. Considerable flowlines are visible on both sides.
