1816 1C MS61Brown NGC. XF45 EAC. N-1, Early Die State, R.4. Tied for 11th finest known, but six of the better coins have not been seen for 40 or more years. The N-1 variety shares an obverse die with both N-2 and N-3, but was struck earlier than either of the other two varieties. This example is from a very early die state with obverse dentils fused only over star 10. The reverse has a trace of the die crack connecting the tops of TE in UNITED. A raised die line extends through the centers of TATES to the rim between S and O. Weakly defined at O of ONE and E of CENT, as always. A spectacular example of the variety with intermingled tan and darker brown color on both sides. Lighter tan splashes on the reverse are faded from original mint red. Identified by a small field nick between star 4 and Liberty's forehead.

1816 1C --Double Struck, Second Strike 60% Off Center--VG10 PCGS. N-4, High R.2. A dramatic example of this widely collected series and always popular as an error. Here the second striking is due north of the first, with the resultant blurring of details at the top of the first striking. Bright, light brown surfaces. Apparently this coin circulated for many years before its peculiarity caused it to be withdrawn from the channels of commerce. (PCGS# 1591)

1816 1C N-1, R.4. AU58 NGC. VF35 EAC. This obverse die was used for the first three Newcomb numbers cataloged for 1816, including the Randall Hoard N-2 variety and the scarce N-3 die marriage. Die state data places this variety as the first of these three to be struck, followed by N-3 and finally N-2. An intermediate die state with the obverse rim beginning to crumble over stars 9 and 10. In his Condition Census, Bill Noyes places this example in the sixth spot. This appearance is only the seventh time in the past 25 years that one of the six finest examples has appeared for sale at auction. The Reiver Collection specimen has pleasing golden-brown color, blended with lighter tan and mahogany shades. The surfaces have minor marks as expected for the grade. Among these are a few tiny nicks in the left obverse field.

1816 1C AU Details NCS. AU50 EAC. N-3, Late Die State, R.4. This is the sixth finest known example of the variety. Just three or four Mint State examples of this variety have been identified. This is an extremely important opportunity for the advanced collector. Lovely medium brown surfaces are blended with lighter chestnut color. Some roughness is visible on Liberty's cheek as struck. A couple of prominent depressions on the cheek will identify this example in the future. This is a later die state with the obverse rim crumbling the same as the previous lot and heavy flowlines through the reverse legend. NCS Improperly Cleaned.

1816 MS 62 Brown PCGS. N-9, Low R.3. EAC graded AU 50. On the lower portion of the face is a small nick. A thin scratch is located at the base of the neck, in the lower left obverse field are some faint abrasions, and at the rim right of star 8 is a dark spot. Golden, medium-light brown color, faded from original mint red, traces of which are quite evident on the obverse. (PCGS# 1591)

Undated 1C Large Cent--Full 1st Strike Brockage Obverse--XF40 PCGS. The reverse was properly struck, if somewhat off center with softening definition toward the right periphery. The obverse, on the other hand, was impressed into the reverse of another coin that had just been struck. A mirror image of the reverse of that coin is now visible where the obverse of this coin should be. There are no mentionable abrasions on either side, and the surfaces present a smooth, medium brown appearance.
