1838 1C MS 67 Red and Brown NGC. An early issue in Christian Gobrecht's large cent series, the 1838 registered a staggering production figure of more than 6 million coins. Easily obtainable in circulated grades, the issue is, nonetheless, all but unknown at the Superb Gem grade level. The single finest certified survivor between both major grading services (9/99), the present coin is unsurpassable in every regard. Vibrant orange-red luster on both sides pounds through the thin veil of crimson-brown patina. Very well struck, the surfaces show obvious signs of careful preservation. This beautiful coin belongs in a collection that highlights condition rarities.

A lustrous and splendidly preserved premium Gem with blended orange and lilac color. The centers are meticulously struck, and only a few of the upper stars do not possess sharp centrils. 1838 1C MS67 Red and Brown NGC. N-4. R.2. Exceptional quality for the collector as the surfaces are simply superb. This is undoubtedly one of the finest cents of this variety to survive with pristine surfaces throughout. Furthermore, the color is a delight, with ample mint red fading toward light tan on both sides. Fully and completely struck by the dies and free of all but the most minute signs of handling. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show this to be the only and finest example graded of this variety. If you demand the best, then here it is. (PCGS# 1742)

1838 1C MS65 Red and Brown NGC. N-3, R.1. Considerable mint orange appears over each side. The surfaces are well preserved, with no significant abrasions or unsightly spotting, and the design elements are sharply impressed, though all of the star centers are weak. The variety is confirmed by blurred denticles under the date, a perfectly formed E in LIBERTY, vertical die scratches between ON and E in CENT, a small dot above the center reverse dot. Population: 17 in 65, 10 finer (8/05). (PCGS# 1742)
