1839 1C Silly Head MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. An ever-popular variety among type collectors and early copper specialists alike, the present representative is toned in mottled glossy brown shades. Plenty of faded orange-red luster is seen outlining most, if not all of the devices. There is some softness of strike over the left borders, but both sides are suitably sharp over the focal features. This attractive Gem is free of bothersome abrasions and singularly mentionable carbon flecks. (PCGS# 1749)

1839 1C Silly Head MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. N-4, R.1. Five different portrait styles were struck in 1839, and fortunately for collectors, all are affordable in Mint State aside from the challenging Plain Cords variety. The irreverent Silly Head moniker dates to the 19th Century, and is noted for beaded cords and hair curls on the forehead and behind the shoulder tip. Only two Newcomb varieties of the Silly Head are known, N-4 and N-9. This pleasing Gem has ample orange-red color accompanied by lavender-red patina on the portrait and fields. The centers are well struck, and the absence of detrimental contact ensures the eye appeal. Population: 1 in 65 Red and Brown, none finer (10/03). (PCGS# 1749)
