1847/47 1C Large Over Small 47 MS64 Brown PCGS. N-2, R.3. Die State a. Graded MS63 by Bob Grellman and considered by him to be the second finest known. An early die state example with clearly visible lines to the left from the dentils at star 13. Frosty medium olive-brown color with some remaining orange mint color on the reverse. Although slightly subdued, the surfaces are exceptional and nearly mark free. A tiny carbon speck is visible between C and A of AMERICA. The repunched date features are boldly visible. Previously certified MS65 Brown by NGC. EAC 60+.

1847/847 1C Large Over Small 7. N-18, R.5. MS64 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. Grellman state d. The desirable and rare terminal die state with three prominent obverse rim cuds near stars 1, 2, and 4. Bold die lines are also noted at IC in AMERICA, and the 8 and 4 in the date are blatantly repunched north. Medium brown color is consistent across the obverse; the reverse has lovely olive and rose tints. An excellent strike, and the only detectable contact is a tick northeast of the mouth. Shallow planchet flaws near the T in CENT are as made. Although traditionally referred to as a Large Over Small 7 variety, the repunching on the 7 is very similar to the 1867 Snow-1 Cent, for which Snow states, "The initial punching was squeezed to appear smaller by the second, stronger impression."

1847/47 1C Large Over Small 1847. N-18, R.5. MS64 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. Grellman state a. The entire date is recut with the initial entry high, encroaching on the bust of Liberty. The repunching was slightly lower, with larger digits that still join the bottom line of the bust. Lustrous medium brown surfaces with darker olive on the devices. The entire figure of Liberty has a finely stippled appearance, as struck. This example is probably in or near the Condition Census for the variety, and is certainly an excellent example of the early die state.

1847/47 1C Large Over Small 47. N-2, R.3. MS63 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. Grellman state a. The 47 is boldly repunched at the peak of the digits, and the flag of the 1 is repunched south. This beautiful golden-brown representative has only the most trivial and infrequent contact, and only the fourth and fifth stars do not display clear centrils. A tiny reverse rim ding at 10 o'clock is of little consequence. An opportunity to acquire for the specialized collection a handsome Reiver example of this interesting die marriage.

Marks are so trivial as to be not worthy of mention for the grade. Traces of steel-blue color are a bit more prevalent on the obverse. This Guide Book variety is quite scarce in Mint State, and most such pieces are likely from the more available Newcomb-2 dies. Population: 6 in 63, 1 finer (8/05). (PCGS# 1880)

1847/47 1C Large Over Small 47. N-18, R.5--Environmental Damage-NCS. AU Details. VF35 EAC. Grellman state c. Brown with some areas of reddish-brown toning on the obverse that are slightly rough. The surfaces are reasonably smooth and glossy. There is an old ding on the E in CENT. The leaves under OF are slightly flattened due to an old hit. Die State c with obverse rim breaks from under the 1 to star 2, which is extremely rare.

1847 1C Large Over Medium 7 AU55 NGC. N-18, R.5. A little light wear is seen over the central highpoints, but the surfaces are remarkably distraction-free for a copper coin that saw actual circulation. There are a few wispy abrasions on the obverse over and before Liberty's portrait, none of which are worthy of individual mention. Even reddish-brown patina overlays both sides with a few streaks of deeper color on the obverse. The Condition Census for this issue, as quoted by Robinson, includes the following examples: 64; 63; 60; 58 (3); 50; 40 (3).
