1841 1C PR65 Red and Brown NGC. This coin was previously offered as lot 6498 in our May 2000 Central States Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "Six examples of this rare, early proof issue surfaced in the 1903 Eavenson Sale (Chapman, 4/03) as part of a Mint official's collection. While it is unknown whether or not the present piece owes its existence to this collection, we are positive that it is among the finest examples available to today's collector. The surfaces exhibit mottled crimson-brown patina and considerable remaining luster. The central features are boldly defined and there are no distracting features. A small contact mark in the obverse field to the right of the date is, however, important for pedigree purposes." Population: 1 in 65 Red and Brown, only 1 finer (4/02). (PCGS# 1953)

1841 1C PR 64 Red and Brown PCGS. Both sides show even, crimson-brown coloration, but accents of orange luster glow around the devices at select angles. The strike is razor sharp throughout and the surfaces are at the threshold of a full Gem grade. According to Walter Breen (1977), the Philadelphia Mint struck no more than a couple of dozen proof cents in 1841. (PCGS# 1953)

This coin was previously offered as lot 5922 in our July 2002 New York Signature Sale, where it was described as: "Six examples of this rare, early proof issue surfaced in the 1903 Eavenson Sale (Chapman, 4/1903) as part of a Mint official's collection. 1841 PR 63 Red and Brown, Questionable Color. N-1, the only dies from which proofs were struck this year. Breen (1977) notes that several of the proofs of this year have fiery-red color. We suspect this one did too before cleaning as it still retains a fair amount with bright iridescent blue peripheries. The fields are deeply mirrored and the rims squared off, leaving no doubt about the status of this coin. An undetermined number of proofs were struck from these dies (and no business strikes) with a couple of dozen estimated today in all grades. (PCGS# 1953)
