1856 1C PR 66 Brown NGC. N-5, the only known dies. All 1856 large cents were struck from a single die pair. With an extant population of perhaps 100 pieces, this issue is one of the more readily available proof large cents. Both sides display a uniform, chocolate-brown appearance with no appreciable reflectivity. Nevertheless, the razor sharp strike, the three striations below Liberty's ear, and the die defect on the leaf to the left of the O in ONE, confirm this coin's proof status. Whispers of olive patina are intermingled throughout, but there are no bothersome hairlines or contact marks. (PCGS# 1997)

1856 PR 65 Brown. A needle sharp strike with nearly perfect, deeply mirrored surfaces. Close examination reveals a few tiny dark spots on the obverse with one noticeable spot to the left of the fifth star. This lovely piece is chocolate-brown with areas of blue and mint red. Breen estimates that more than one hundred pieces are known in proof, but we feel the number known is much lower and few can equal this outstanding example. (PCGS# 1997)

1856 1C Slanted 5 PR64 Brown NGC. N-5, the only known proof dies, Low R.5. With an extant population of perhaps 70 pieces, this issue is one of the more readily available proof large cents. Both sides display a uniform, mahogany-brown appearance with no appreciable reflectivity in the fields. Nevertheless, the razor-sharp strike, the three striations below Liberty's ear, and the die defects on the E in ONE confirm this coin's variety and proof status. Whispers of forest-green patina are seen near the reverse periphery, but there are no bothersome hairlines or contact marks. Housed in an old green label holder. EAC PR55. Census: 5 in 64, 6 finer (11/06). (PCGS# 1997)

1856 1C PR 66 Brown NGC. An exquisite proof example with glossy brown surfaces that are highlighted by iridescent hints of rose and tangerine. Sharply struck throughout with delicate details visible even in the star centers and the denticles. Writing in 1988, Breen estimated that more than 100 examples of this proof issue are extant, although we doubt whether many other pieces can rival this coin's technical quality. (PCGS# 1997)

1856 1C Slanted 5 PR64 Brown PCGS. N-5, the only known proof dies, Low R.5. John Grellman (2001) suggests this proof-only variety was struck soon after large cent production ceased in 1857. A melange of reddish-tan, gold-brown, and aqua-green adorns exceptionally well preserved surfaces; the only pedigree-marker we can find is an inoffensive mark on the left part of Liberty's neck. A well-executed strike imparts outstanding definition to the design features. Population: 7 in 64 Brown, 0 finer (1/07). EAC 60. (PCGS# 1997)
