1916-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Well struck, with honey-gold surfaces that have just begun to mellow, this piece exhibits some scattered ticks and specks. Well struck, with localized striking weakness confined to LI of LIBERTY on the obverse and a few letters of the Latin motto on the reverse. Lincoln's hair, beard, and coat are well detailed. Eye appealing and pleasing, and a series key in this condition. One of the finest so graded. Population: 22 in 65, 0 finer (11/05).

1916-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. A rather dramatic increase in production at the San Francisco Mint to more than 22.5 million pieces did not noticeably alter this issue's scarcity at the Gem level. Although generally well struck, other inconsistencies in production keep most Mint State survivors out of the Gem ranks. The strike on this outstanding representative is razor sharp and bright golden-tan surfaces display just a few scattered specks of carbon on the obverse. As is characteristic of the issue, the mintmark is more of a blob than an S. Much underrated in relation to its lower mintage S-mint predecessors. Population: 21 in 65, 0 finer (3/05).

1916-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. The 1916-S is not usually thought of as a rare issue, although at this level it becomes an outright rarity and it is basically unavailable any finer. Only a single example has been certified by either service above this grade (and that by NGC), and only about two dozen examples have achieved this grade. The fiery copper-orange surfaces exhibit well impressed design features, and exude originality. Both sides are essentially abrasion-free; a linear mark on Lincoln's forehead helps to pedigree this piece. Population: 22 in 65 Red, 0 finer (11/06). (PCGS# 2494)

1916-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Lovely matte-like surfaces are not only boldly struck, but have also encountered little appreciable mellowing over the past 89 years. Just a touch of mint-green and rose-violet patina is noticed on the obverse. The mintage of the 1916-S is substantially higher than previous S-mint Lincolns, but this rise in production does not correlate into greater availability in Gem Red condition. If anything, the 1916-S is even scarcer at this level. Population: 21 in 65, 0 finer (6/05).

1916-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. An issue that is much more difficult than generally realized, the 1916-S, with a mintage of more than 22 million coins, shows a PCGS population of only 23 coins in MS65 Red, and none finer (1/07). The respectable mintage for an S-mint Lincoln cent likely overshadows this issue's downright rarity at the Gem Red level, since both earlier and later S-mint issues show drastically lower mintages. The present example offers a bold strike over lustrous orange-gold surfaces. Some trivial flecks fail to detract from the significant eye appeal of this elusive issue. (PCGS# 2494)

1916-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Another sharply struck early Lincoln cent that has bold definition on Lincoln's beard, hair and the motto, areas that are frequently softly impressed. The surfaces are free of distracting spots or surface abrasions, and a strong loupe is needed to find the minute signs of contact. Identifiable by a short planchet flaw below Lincoln's temple and a speck at the top of EN of CENT. To date a mere 22 pieces have been graded this high, with none seen finer by PCGS.
