1855 PR 66 NGC. This date has always been accorded more collector interest than others in the Type Two series because of the low business strike mintage of only 139,000 pieces. Proofs, of course, are of the highest order of rarity. No more than 30 examples are believed extant today, and for decades the 1855 proof has been highly prized. A coin in a Kabealo auction in 1958 realized an astounding $1,050, a price that stood as a record until 1966.
This piece is nothing less than amazing. It is far and away the finest of this date that we have seen in the past five years. The fields are deeply reflective with shimmering, glass-like mirrors. This depth of reflectivity adds an element of brightness that might otherwise be lost on a non-proof coin as both sides are rather deeply toned. The obverse has rose tinted coloration while the reverse has a touch of light blue in the center with rose toning at that margin. Struck from the Breen-2920 dies that show pronounced repunching on the 855 in the date. (PCGS# 3702)

1855 3CS PR 66 NGC. This is a simply spectacular coin from an aesthetic viewpoint, to say nothing of its rarity. Both sides are incredibly well defined for a three cent silver. The obverse is deeply toned with a target effect that moves from golden-orange peripheral iridescence through electric-blue hues before terminating in the lavender-gray center. The reverse is equally original, but the colors are more evenly distributed. As befits the grade, there is not a single mentionable hairline or contact mark.

The 1855 is a low mintage issue with a business strike delivery of a mere 139,000 pieces. Most of these coins, as well as the 25-30 extant proofs, were struck from a single obverse die. The proofs were struck first and, as such, they show the recutting on the date most prominently. The scarcity of high quality business strikes further enhances the desirability of this beautiful specimen. (PCGS# 3702)

1855 3CS PR66 NGC. Ex: Pittman. Probably 30-35 proofs are extant today of this very rare issue. It is likely that all were issued as part of the copper-silver proof sets of the year, meaning that perhaps as many as 50-60 sets were originally issued. Proofs of this issue show die file marks near STAT(ES O)F. The digits in the date are prominently double punched with the original numerals too low. Apparently the Mint had difficulty with other proofs of this year as well. The proof 1855 Dime is also prominently double punched and some of the Half Dollars are overdates.

The surfaces on this piece are deeply mirrored with a light overlay of gray-rose toning on each side. Identifiable by a curved lint mark to the left of the denomination and a short, straight one to the right. Extremely rare and one of the finest examples known. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (11/02).

1855 3CS PR65 NGC. Despite the fact that this cataloger has seen a couple of proof 1855 Three Cent Silvers over the last year, this pre-1859 issue is anything but common in today's hobby. We do not know how many proofs of this date were actually struck, but Breen (1977) states that no more than 25-30 coins are extant. These survivors are further in demand due to the limited original mintage of the business strike 1855 Trime. Struck from the same dies that later delivered 99% of the business strikes, this coin displays bold repunching on the digits in the date. Delicate golden-gray iridescence overlays the well mirrored fields and sharply impressed devices. A few trivial planchet flaws (all as struck) are noted, but we can find no singularly mentionable hairlines or contact marks. (PCGS# 3702)

1855 3CS PR65 PCGS. Breen-2920. Doubled Date. The number of surviving Proof Silver Three Cent pieces from the first two design types is quite limited. The Type One design was produced from 1851 through 1853, including the only branch-mint issue struck in New Orleans in 1851. Perhaps half a dozen Proof examples of the Type One design are known, with only a single Proof 1851 certified by PCGS, and none of this type certified by NGC. Type Two examples were coined from 1854 through 1858, and Proof examples are more plentiful, but can hardly be considered common. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify a total of 332 Proof examples of this design type. Finally, Type Three coins were produced from 1859 through 1873, and the two major grading services have graded 5,314 examples, roughly half of the original mintage of 10,840 coins. Can we surmise from this that the "mintage" of Type Two Proof Three Cent Silver coins is about 700 pieces? Such relationships may prove beneficial to future numismatic research.

This Gem Proof example is sharply struck, and it has lightly reflective fields beneath lovely original iridescent toning. The reverse fields are more prominently mirrored. Sharp doubling of the date is usually only seen on Proof examples from this obverse die, although business strikes from the same die show evidence of doubling as well. PCGS 1855 PR 64. A rare Type Two proof issue that displays watery brilliance and only a touch of golden color along the obverse edge. Minor doubling is noted within the last 3 digits of the date. A small, but unknown number of proofs were struck, this being just a few years before the mint began its policy of offering proof coins to the general public. The date also carries a slight premium to collectors because of the extreme scarcity of choice business strikes. PCGS has certified just 10 pieces in all proof grades, with 4 graded equally and only 3 finer. (PCGS# 3702)
